This is a substantive, full time appointment for a Consultant in Ophthalmology to support delivery of services within our friendly modern and well-equipped Eye Centre.

Our service is expanding, and an enthusiastic and committed individual is sought to work with our existing clinical team at what is an exciting point in service development. The Department has links with the Tertiary Trust at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and delivers the Northern part of the Derbyshire Diabetic Retinal Screening (DRS) programme.

We are seeking someone with good general ophthalmic skills and consideration can be considered for candidates with varied sub-speciality interests so long as these align with departmental operational requirements.

We would be particularly interested to hear from individuals who are on the Speciality Register, who have an interest in medical education as the Department will be taking on higher speciality trainees in the forthcoming year.

1:11 weeks NROC - shared cover with Kings Mill Hospital. A week of nights and weekend is done around every 11 weeks second on call with an experienced Specialist Grade first on call.

Qualifications
  • Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise and entry on GMC specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Completion of a fellowship or other qualification in an ophthalmic sub-specialty or special interest
  • Glaucoma fellowship with experience of trabeculectomy
Experience
  • Documented clinical training and experience in Ophthalmology sufficient to gain UK CCST in Ophthalmology. Independent cataract surgery skills.
  • Able to work independently at a senior level, taking responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Clinical supervision experience/skills
  • Sufficient experience to safely undertake Consultant level on call in an acute general hospital Ophthalmology Department as an independent opinion
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist services, including experience of organising and managing out-patient priorities and waiting lists
  • Ability to lead a clinical team with proven clinical leadership experience
  • Management experience or attendance at courses for SpRs/Consultant level practitioners.
Skills
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion for both emergency and elective patient care.
  • Ability to undertake training/mentoring of clinical staff and enthusiasm for education.
