Job description

Job Opportunity: Consultant Midwife

Are you an experienced post-registration midwife seeking a new challenge? We offer an exciting opportunity for an aspiring Consultant Midwife to develop both personally and professionally.

The Consultant Midwife will leverage midwifery expertise to promote clinical pathways in maternity care, leading midwifery practice across all maternity service areas. The role involves leading and supporting midwives to achieve their full potential as autonomous practitioners, placing women and their families at the center of care planning.

The successful candidate will act as an innovator, motivator, and change agent, with a high degree of autonomy to support and influence clinical pathways, including implementing national initiatives, service reconfiguration, and appropriate models of care. Additionally, the role involves facilitating and enhancing public health choices.

We offer a Band 8B post, providing support for candidates who require training and development as they prepare for the Consultant Midwife role.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Leading service redesign to empower midwives to meet the needs of the local population, aligned with the Better Birth Strategy and relevant policies.
  2. Developing midwifery practice across all areas of the maternity service.
  3. Promoting and developing clinical pathways for both high-risk and low-risk maternal care.
  4. Providing expert clinical advice to medical and midwifery staff to ensure best practice standards, improve outcomes, and reduce unnecessary interventions and LSCS births.
  5. Contributing to clinical governance and maternity incentive schemes by ensuring evidence-based practice and staff competence development.
  6. Participating in research and audit activities with a multidisciplinary approach.
  7. Representing the directorate at external networks and reporting progress to the Directorate.
