Have you got at extensive post registration experience? Do you feel ready for a new challenge? This is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring Consultant Midwife to develop personally and professionally.

The Consultant Midwife will use midwifery expertise to promote clinical pathways in maternity care leading midwifery practice within all areas of maternity services.

The role will be to lead and support midwives to realise their full potential as autonomous practitioners placing women and their families at the centre of care planning.

The post holder will act as an innovator, motivator, key change agent and role model, with a high level of autonomy in order to support and influence the clinical pathways within the midwifery services including implementation of national initiatives, service reconfiguration and appropriate models of care. The successful candidate will facilitate and enhance Public Health choices.

To fulfil this varied role, you will need a flexible approach, an ability to 'think outside the box' and a willingness to not only embrace but lead on system wide changes in practice.

We are able to offer a Band 8B post as a unique opportunity of support to candidates requiring a training and development post as they prepare for the role of Consultant Midwife.

Main duties of the job

1. Leading service redesign empowering midwives to meet the needs of the local population in line with key objectives outlined the Better Birth Strategy and local and national policy documents.

2. The development of midwifery practice within all areas of the maternity service.

3. Actively promoting and developing clinical pathways for high risk and low risk care for mothers.

4. Providing expert clinical advice to all medical and midwifery staff to ensure best practice standards are met that will improve outcomes for women and influence a reduction in unnecessary interventions and LSCS Births.

5. Making a significant contribution to the clinical governance agenda and collation of evidence for the maternity incentive scheme (CNST) by ensuring that practice is evidence based and through the development of staff competence at all levels.

6. Contribute to the research and audit agenda always ensuring a multidisciplinary approach

7. To represent the directorate at external networks and report progress to the Directorate

Person specification

Experience

  • Previous experience at band 8a and above
  • Experience of clinical governance activities including audit and risk management within maternity service
  • Experience of leading and implementing change
  • Experience of effective leadership
  • Experience of evaluating 'evidence' against prescribed standards for a range of assessments
  • Experience of working as a consultant midwife for ≥ 1 year

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse/Midwife with current NMC registration
  • Evidence of on-going, relevant professional development
  • Teaching qualification

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of staff management processes
  • Knowledge of key NHS service strategy, planning and delivery processes as these relate to local services
  • Knowledge of current national publications and research and their relation to local needs and practice
  • Comprehensive understanding of midwifery practice
  • Able to demonstrate awareness of current changes in midwifery education and practice

Skills

  • Working across professional boundaries at all levels of the site and organisation
  • Able to present complex issues clearly and concisely at all levels including divisional and service level
  • Evidence of working with external partners/ organisations to influence practice at a strategic level.
  • Able to manage a maternity unit and make appropriate decisions regarding activity, skill mix and safety of the unit.
  • Evidence of publications and conference presentations
