Job description

The Anaesthetic Department at the WHH is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking individual to join our dedicated team of clinicians. The role involves providing surgical services for the regional head and neck cancer service, colorectal cancer, and other specialties including gynae, ENT, trauma surgery, breast, paediatrics, and ophthalmology.

Our department supports a 24-hour pPCI cardiology service, operates within a regional level 2 trauma unit, and manages a busy obstetric unit with 4,000 deliveries annually. Chronic pain, vascular, and urology services are based at Kent and Canterbury Hospital. Most elective orthopaedic services are provided at the state-of-the-art Elective Orthopaedic Centre in Canterbury, with opportunities to work across multiple hospital sites.

We have a well-established pre-assessment service supporting all surgical specialties. The hospital recently built a new 24-bed intensive care unit, and the emergency department is undergoing extensive refurbishment. Our department promotes educational and research opportunities, offering comprehensive multidisciplinary simulation training across the trust and region.

The new Kent and Medway Medical School provides opportunities for involvement in undergraduate education. We hold departmental monthly audit and educational half days, free from clinical duties, along with a weekly education half day for trainees led by consultant staff.

Our team is sociable, friendly, and supportive, with excellent administrative support and a large communal office. This is a 10 PA post, including 2 SPAs. Job plans are flexible and tailored to the applicant’s skills and experience, supporting many specialist clinical interests within William Harvey Hospital or across the trust.

Role specific duties
  1. Provide safe, evidence-based anaesthetic care for various surgical lists at William Harvey Hospital, with opportunities to work at other trust sites.
  2. Maintain and improve standards and quality of anaesthetic services.
  3. Supervise and train junior staff, including junior doctors, medical students, and other clinical personnel within theatres.
  4. Support educational roles; educational qualifications are desirable.
  5. Maintain skills and update knowledge to meet the Continuing Education and Professional Development requirements of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
  6. Participate in the department’s audit programme.
  7. Lead tutorials and department meetings in rotation with other staff.
  8. Participate in the consultant on-call rota.

The Trust comprises five hospitals offering a wide range of services and opportunities for innovation. The anaesthetic department operates at three sites: William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, The Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, and Kent & Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, each providing comprehensive services including regional specialties and robotic surgery at the latter.

Additional outpatient, diagnostic, and minor injury services are available at the new hospital in Dover, Buckland, and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Folkestone.

Through our Family First scheme, we pledge to find roles for partners of consultants offered a substantive post. For more information, visit this link.

We also offer removal expenses (for substantive positions), up to 32 days’ annual leave, and active support for study, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives as part of our ‘We care’ journey, along with medical education and research opportunities.
