The closing date is 15 June 2025
The Trust seeks to appoint a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Neurosurgical Anaesthesia. This is a whole-time position, and the new appointee will share the caseload, facilities, and trainee-grade support with the existing consultants. While the main focus of this position is to meet the requirements of Neurosurgical theatres, there is potential for the successful candidate to utilize the flexible theatre element of the rota to undertake Neuro IR theatre lists, which include a thrombectomy service, all of which can be explored further at interview.
The post is a whole-time position of 10 programmed activities (PAs) and offers 8.5 PAs, plus 1.5 SPA.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide pre-operative assessment, anaesthesia, and follow-up. He/she will be expected to introduce and apply new techniques as appropriate and to share the general workload of the department, including cover for colleagues where practical.
The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals. The appointee will share clinical responsibilities within the Department of Anaesthesia, including perioperative assessment. In addition to subspecialty duties, the appointee will provide anaesthesia for adult patients across various specialties as appropriate to training and experience.
Develop a team with a strong emphasis on delivering a cross-site service.
Post-holders will be required to work on each site.
Comply with your agreed job plan, which is reviewed annually.
The role involves prospective on-call duties, attracting 1.25 PAs with a 5% uplift due to frequency (1:10), including planned weekends, covering both adult and neonatal to teenage patients. The on-call rota is shared with a second consultant, covering two hospital sites, with specific site coverage assigned on each date throughout the year.
We are an organisation that is continuously improving. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24, are no longer in special measures, and our Chief Executive, Matthew Trainer, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a commitment to deliver high-quality care that our patients are satisfied with.
Many of our 8,000 staff come from 146 different countries, live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve, and the majority are from black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups. Over 400 staff are on apprenticeship programmes, and we are proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We operate from two main sites: King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. Our emergency departments are among the busiest in London, with over 300,000 visits in 2023.
Patients across northeast London benefit from two new state-of-the-art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub, which will significantly increase scanning capacity.
We plan to introduce an electronic patient record next year, enabling clinical teams to access patient records across our seven hospitals, improving staff efficiency and patient care.
Deputise for departmental colleagues in cases of annual leave and, where practicable, short-term sickness.
Participate in clinical audit processes within the Trust and, where appropriate, at a regional level, in cooperation with the Audit Committee.
Encourage and participate in research initiatives approved by the local Ethical Committee; experience in research and audit is advantageous.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current anaesthetic procedures.
Undertake administrative duties related to patient care and attend departmental meetings.
Support the Divisional Director, Specialty Leads, and colleagues in managing the department to ensure high standards, quality patient care, and service development within the Clinical Governance framework.
