Job description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified Consultant Histopathologists for a full-time NHS post in the Department of Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology based in Truro, Cornwall.

The laboratory is a designated centre for many cancer sites and has full UKAS Accreditation. It received over 35,000 histology requests, approximately 1,600 diagnostic cytology requests, and 900 autopsy requests during 2023, performing a wide range of molecular techniques.

Applicants from both specialised and generalised backgrounds will be considered, with a preference for those interested in GI and/or dermatopathology. The plan is to install and implement digital histopathology in 2025.

You will:

  • Undertake molecular automated PCR for theranostic work (e.g., Idylla BRAF) and tumour expression analysis (e.g., ALK in lung carcinoma)
  • Provide EUS and EBUS rapid onsite evaluation services for pancreatic, lung, adrenal, and head/neck cases
  • Support the Bowel Cancer Screening programme, including age expansion and Bowel Scope Screening
  • Collaborate with neighbouring hospitals on procuring an end-to-end digital histopathology solution connecting all five trusts in the region, facilitating case sharing, MDT discussions, and expert second opinions

Person requirements:

  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • FRCPath qualification or evidence of equivalent
  • On GMC specialist register or within 6 months of interview
  • UK-trained applicants must hold a CCT or be within six months of award; non-UK trained applicants must demonstrate UK CCT equivalence
  • Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
