Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of the Barts Health NHS Trust Group, is looking for a full-time Consultant Geriatrician to join our Older People’s Services (OPS) team based at Whipps Cross Hospital.

The posts offer an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and develop new models of working and services supporting all older people attending the hospital and within the local community. Whipps Cross Hospital serves a population with a high degree of frailty and aims to become a centre for Geriatric Medicine within the Barts Health Group.

In particular, this post will enable the post-holder to participate in reshaping local acute frailty service delivery and contribute to the departmental 5-year strategy plan.

Main duties of the job

The posts offer an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and develop innovative models of care that support older adults both in hospital and the community. Whipps Cross Hospital serves a frail population and is developing into a centre for Geriatric Medicine within the Barts Health Group.

This role involves reshaping local acute frailty services and contributing to strategic planning.

Whipps Cross Acute Frailty Service is well-established and recognized as an example of outstanding practice by the CQC (2019). The inpatient Acute Frailty Unit was rated ‘Outstanding’ by Healthwatch Waltham Forest (2020). The post-holder will work with a motivated multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care tailored to the needs of an aging population.

This position is part of the redevelopment of Geriatric Medicine at Whipps Cross University Hospital and offers a unique opportunity to collaborate on hospital redevelopment projects.

You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCST.

Person specification
Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility within 6 months of CCST) for Geriatric Medicine or G(I)Medicine by CCT or CESR
  • Evidence of research participation (peer-reviewed publications)
  • Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD)
Experience
  • Higher specialist training in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine
  • Broad experience in Geriatrics and G(I)M
  • Experience in organizing and delivering teaching programs
  • Current ALS certificate
Knowledge
  • Detailed knowledge of Geriatrics and G(I)M, including essential skills
  • Knowledge of clinical audit and quality improvement
  • Understanding of modern medical education and lifelong learning
Skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience supervising medical staff
  • Effective communication with colleagues, patients, families, GPs, and other agencies
Other
  • Flexible, cooperative approach
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Willingness to undertake additional responsibilities at various levels
  • Willing to live within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the hospital
  • Self-motivated with a critical, inquisitive approach
