Job description

Consultant - General Paediatrician with Interest in Epilepsey

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of 19 dedicated WTE Acute Paediatric Consultants, with an interest in Epilepsy.

Our three core values, and the behaviours that support them, guide everything we do and set out what we expect of our staff in the way they treat patients, visitors, service users and each other.

There will be 1 general OP clinic and 1 Epilepsy clinic per week. You will have attending duties on the Children's Ward, Neonatal Unit and the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU). While working on the PAU you may need to conduct Child Protection Medicals as needed.

Each week we have 2 consultants attending, 1 for Paediatrics, and 1 for Neonates. When attending the Paediatrics Ward, the post holder will be responsible for the Paediatric Ward and HDU. When attending the Neonatal Unit the post holder will be responsible for the babies on the Neonatal unit, Delivery suite, postnatal ward and transitional care.

We provide a consultant delivered GP Hotline Service Mon - Fri 0900-1800 taking acute referrals and providing advice and guidance.

On call for out-of-hours Consultant cover will be 1 in 12, covering both Paediatrics and Neonates; when on call the consultants are expected to attend the night handover. All patients are reviewed by a consultant within 14 hours of a decision to admit. The weekend cover is split between 2 consultants who split their attending week on the Children's ward. We supervise every handover.

Main duties of the job

Management structure

The paediatric department is part of the Frimley Health Women's and Children's Directorate.

The Paediatric Unit

Ward 24 paediatric unit has a total of 29 cots or beds, with the ability to accept infants, children, and teenagers, in addition there are 7 spaces in the Paediatric Assessment Unit. As well as direct admissions from ED, the ward also facilitates elective activity, and the PAU takes direct GP admissions. In addition to this we also take day cases, offer ambulatory care and open access for some patient groups. Separate areas on the ward are designated for children with medical conditions, children having surgery and those suffering from infectious diseases.

The Neonatal Unit

Local Neonatal Unit (LNU) has 17 cots for babies born at 27 weeks gestation and above and cares for babies with a range of care needs and conditions. We also work with the neonatal transport teams to transfer babies to other hospitals who need care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Paediatric Assessment Unit

The Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) is adjacent to the in-patient ward and is staffed by nurses and Resident Doctors with a supervising Consultant. It serves an SDEC function. In the unit there are 7 beds and will typically see between 20 to 30 children daily. We are committed to supporting the ED to manage flow out of ED, and the PAU takes direct GP referrals. We also provide day care, ambulatory care and open access for some patient groups.
