Join our dynamic Nature team as a Consultant Ecologist in our offices located in Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester, Croydon, Cambridge, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Nottingham, or other locations considered. Benefit from our flexible hybrid working model. At AECOM, we’re at the forefront of innovation, delivering a diverse portfolio of ecology programs and projects through long-term partnerships with key clients. Currently, our Northern regional Nature teams are working on projects such as a new electrical transmission line for National Grid, rail upgrades including the Transpennine Route Upgrade, blue and green hydrogen facilities, solar farms, and other water and highway projects, with opportunities for travel across the UK and internationally.

Depending on your interests and skillset, you will have opportunities to support various activities such as: using innovative techniques for species and habitats surveys, work-winning, and Biodiversity Net Gain mentoring. Our supportive environment offers internal and external training within a nurturing mentoring and coaching framework.

Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Participate in the health, safety, and well-being culture of the team;
  • Support liaison with project managers and clients on ecological requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects;
  • Organise and carry out desk studies and field-based habitat, botanical, and protected species surveys;
  • Assist, as appropriate to grade, with managing the technical and financial performance of ecological projects to meet budgets and deadlines;
  • Support analysis, evaluation, interpretation, and presentation of ecological data, including report writing and mitigation strategy design;
  • Perform the role of an Ecological Clerk of Works on construction projects;
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with line managers, team members, and clients;
  • Ensure compliance with internal procedures related to health and safety and technical quality, including self-checks of work.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible?

We’re looking for candidates with:

  • Experience in ecology-related roles in the public and/or private sector;
  • Knowledge of UK wildlife legislation, ecological survey methodologies, and membership of a professional institution such as CIEEM or working towards it;
  • Field skills in botanical identification, Phase 1/UKHab, and protected species surveys;
  • An adaptable approach to meet demands, including occasional longer or unsociable hours and travel;
  • Report writing skills with experience in producing various reports.
