Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

This role supports the Trust for Scotland's Strategy by enhancing building conditions, implementing best practices in heritage conservation and maintenance, and ensuring safe site operations.

Reporting to the Maintenance Lead, you will support planning and executing conservation, maintenance, and repairs for NTS buildings, advise property teams on building care, and assist in maintaining public access during essential works.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Maintenance Management:

Reporting to the NTS Maintenance Lead, you will:

  1. Develop Regional and Property Maintenance Plans, including scope, timelines, budgets, and delivery methods.
  2. Conduct building inspections and surveys, commissioning external surveys as needed.
  3. Monitor progress of Property Plans and report to teams and the Maintenance Lead.
  4. Ensure quality of work and compliance, reporting deviations and recommendations.
  5. Support reactive and emergency maintenance requests.
  6. Assist in procurement and delivery of compliance activities.
  7. Collaborate with operational and central teams for professional services.

Building Conservation & Repair:

You will:

  1. Work with surveyors and teams to plan capital works aligned with maintenance schedules.
  2. Support site inspections for complex projects.
  3. Manage smaller projects, including tendering, procurement, and overseeing work quality and safety.

Statutory & Health & Safety:

Ensure all works comply with relevant legislation, policies, and safety standards, including internal policies, legislation for listed buildings, H&S regulations, and environmental requirements, with support from internal specialists.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in construction, surveying, facilities or maintenance management, architecture, or heritage conservation.
  • At least 5 years' experience in building maintenance or historic building care.
  • Valid UK driving license and access to a vehicle.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Qualifications in traditional building skills or heritage conservation.
  • Qualifications in maintenance or facilities management.
  • Current CSCS supervisor card.

Experience

  • Developing and leading maintenance programs.
  • Surveying practices, traditional construction, pathology, and survey techniques.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations.
  • High health & safety awareness.
  • Supervising consultants and contractors.
  • Managing procurement processes.
  • Leading multidisciplinary teams and fostering collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Customer-focused service delivery.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload.
  • Commitment to professional development and the Trust’s objectives.
  • Willingness to travel.

Desirable Experience

  • Maintenance of diverse portfolios and historic buildings.
  • Contract administration experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, AutoCAD, Revit, or similar tools.
  • Understanding of climate change and sustainability issues related to historic buildings.
