Job description

European Technical Centre – Compliance / Regulatory Engineer
Location: Milton Keynes
The Company: SMC Corporation (UK) Ltd.

With over 60 years of innovation and expertise, SMC is the global market leader in pneumatics and automation technology. Established in Japan in 1959 with headquarters in Tokyo, SMC has a global presence in 82 countries, with 51 subsidiaries and 5 global R&D centres.

The SMC European Technical Centre (ETC) is located next to the SMC UK subsidiary and shares the purpose built 14-acre production and R&D facility and offices located in Milton Keynes.

ETC has an important role supporting the Japanese Technical Centre in ensuring SMC products comply with the latest European regulations.

ETC is currently expanding, and as part of our global organisation, led by SMC Japan, we are focused on delivering innovative and future-proof solutions to our customers in Europe.

From putting the soles on your shoes, to the tarmac they walk on; from a packet of crisps to silicon chips; from wooden toothpicks to electric cars; you’d be amazed at the things we get involved in.

We don’t do these things ourselves, of course, but we have worked with the people that do… to enable their efforts and dreams to be realised. Sometimes our role is significant; sometimes it’s small, but it’s never trivial and it’s always rewarding.

The Role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our European Technical Centre as an Engineer supporting the research on product compliance for SMC products. A major part of the role will include monitoring EU Directives and regulations, as well as the EU Official Journal and UK Government websites. The role is suitable for a candidate with great attention to detail, interested in manufacturing and European law, and with strong reporting skills.

The position will involve working as part of the larger team by collaborating with Engineers in other groups within the Technical Centres, European subsidiaries, and SMC Japan. The purpose of the role is to ensure that all legislative requirements are met, product documentation is kept complete, up to date, and is legally sound. There will also be technical queries to respond to from our customers.

A future part of the role may include training to become an internal auditor, carrying out internal audits under ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001.

To be successful in this role, you must have:

A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Environmental, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic Engineering, or any other associated degree in law or sustainability

  • Previous involvement with standards, regulations, directives etc.
  • Working in a manufacturing company
  • Cooperation with test houses or notified bodies
  • Internal auditor experience
