Job summary

Smurfit Westrock in the East Midlands is seeking a hands-on Folding/Packaging Machine Operator to join our pharmaceutical cartons line.

You will set up and run folding machines, ensure quality and output, perform routine maintenance, and help with crew training. A good numeracy/literacy standard and basic PC skills are needed, with a team-focused, proactive mindset.

Responsibilities

• Set and run folding machines to meet quality and output targets with minimal waste.
• Understand and configure complex carton setups (e.g., 4 corner, Crash Lock base).
• Learn leaflet insertion and tag applicator equipment as required.
• Maintain 5S in the work area; follow procedures and quality policies.
• Carry out routine machine maintenance and report needs to supervisor.
• Take part in daily crew management and shift handovers.
• Support Second Minder and Finishing Assistant training as needed.

Job Purpose

As the nature of our business can vary with changes in customer requirements and operating procedures, the following tasks are the key duties of the role, but it is understood that the Job holder will undertake any function in which he/she is adequately trained or competent.

The role will be working within a fast-paced environment, folding and packing pharmaceutical cartons, meeting the planned output for quality, volume and yield to customer requirements.

Job Responsibilities/Key accountabilities:

• To understand and correctly interpret the job bag (virtual work ticket)
• To set and run folding machine, to meet the quality standards and planned volume to optimum output, using minimum waste.
• To understand how to make ready on Complex Cartons such as 4 corner, Crash Lock base, Internal Fitments, Double wall.
• Have an understanding or prepared to learn setting up a Leaflet insertion machine, Tag applicator.
• A knowledge of the HHS Gluing Systems.
• Produce labels for packing trays and boxes.
• Operate counting machinery.
• Ensure that work area where the individual is working is kept clean and tidy and follows 5S procedure.
• Undertake all duties in accordance with current operating procedures and quality policies. The job holder should ensure that they are aware and understand all such policies and procedures.
• Carry out general and routine maintenance of the folding machines and equipment and to advise the supervisor or senior management of any preventative or additional maintenance required.
• Take charge of the day to day running of the machine (Crew Management).
• Acting support for the Second Minder and Finishing Assistant ensuring that the required training is carried out.
• Ensuring that the machine is left in a reasonable condition at the end of each shift.
