Job description

Location: St Helena Island, South Atlantic

Contract: 2 years FTC available immediately

Salary: £40k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

In this vital role you will own a caseload of patients who have complex and substantial mental health needs. As a member of the Community Mental Health Team, you will ensure high quality individualised care that promotes recovery and maximises independence, displaying sensitivity to patient and relatives’ level of understanding and culture

Offering evidence-based treatment for mental health problems you will perform patient risk assessments and provide person-centred care. You will liaise with doctors, allied health professionals and other agencies as you monitor patients and conduct care planning and review. You must identify those whose needs fall outside of established mental health clinical pathways and also apply short term psychological interventions with appropriate therapies. You should identify risks and report problems that may put health, safety and security at risk and suggest how they might be addressed.

Managing psychiatric crises, you may also be involved in assessing elderly patients, patients with substance misuse problems and detainees in police custody, as well as provide primary physical and mental health care for prisoners. You may also be involved in monitoring detoxification programmes and provide longer term support/treatment, contributing to the development of an updated mental health strategy, providing opportunities for junior staff. As part of the mental health team, you will engage in mental health promotion including presentations, media interviews and public information articles. You will be expected to be on call at least one week in three, out of hours and weekends as required.

A UK Registered Level 1 Mental Health Nurse or equivalent, you have dual qualification RGN/RMN and post registration experience as a Community Psychiatric Nurse or in a community-based team. You can undertake independent clinical decision making. A valid driver’s licence class A is required.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

  • An International Supplement, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh
