About the role

The Communications Officer plays an important role in the BAD’s Communications Team, supporting the delivery of the overall marketing and communications strategy. The Communications Officer contributes to the BAD’s press office, digital channels, public affairs, internal communications, campaigns, and other communications activities.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for someone with at least one year's experience in communications, ideally in science or health, or strong transferable skills. A successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, be organised and curious.

This role is suitable for someone interested in developing experience in a broad range of communications activities.

Role Profile – main responsibilities

The key tasks of the role are to:

  • Produce compelling copy for communications and marketing campaigns
  • Contribute to the BAD’s social media channels. This will include planning, content creation, copywriting, evaluating and monitoring
  • Maintain our campaign calendar and plan social media content to mark relevant events or awareness days
  • Support the press office’s work by answering basic press queries, drawing on existing information or sourcing an appropriate clinician spokesperson (with oversight from the Communications Manager)
  • Assist with more complex press requests as needed
  • Research, draft, review and send press releases as needed
  • Support other Communications Team members with research and proofreading/copy editing
  • Monitor and track communications coverage, including socials, media, and website performance and prepare reports for internal purposes
  • Maintain press lists and contact databases, and conduct approved stakeholder outreach
  • Provide administrative support for the Communications team. This may include filing invoices, booking meetings, taking meeting notes, responding to enquiries, and engaging with external suppliers
  • Assist Communications Manager with membership communications. This may include tasks such as drafting content, proofreading, copyediting, preparing mass email communications for approval, and sourcing updates from other departments
  • Support the Digital Officer with basic website updates using our CRM system as needed
  • Assist with lobbying and public affairs work as required. This may include researching policy issues, stakeholder outreach, and implementing media campaigns around public affairs issues
  • Attend conferences and events as required, including the BAD Annual Meeting in July (maximum five days) and assist with conference organisation when requested
  • Be a brand ambassador for the organisation, advising other departments on brand matters, with support from the Communications Manager and Director of Communications
  • Assist the team and the wider BAD staff with additional tasks as required.

Person specification

Experience:

  • At least one year’s experience in a communications role, or demonstrable transferable skills – Essential
  • PR and/or general communications experience - Desirable
  • Previous experience in health marketing or communications - Desirable
  • Previous experience in events or education marketing – Desirable

  • A good understanding of social media platforms - Essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and persuasively to a wide-ranging audience - Essential
  • Confident in communicating over email, phone, and face-to-face with a range of stakeholders – Essential
