Job summary

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service in the Communications and Engagement team is seeking a part-time Communications Officer for a 12-month fixed-term maternity cover.

The role involves building relationships, developing campaigns, creating content, advising on best practice, media liaison, and supporting incidents, with an out-of-hours rota if required. Shortlisting requires a Level 3 qualification and evidence against essential criteria.

Qualifications

• Level 3 qualification (A Levels, BTEC or equivalent).

Responsibilities

• Build relationships with service areas to understand their priorities and communication needs
• Develop and deliver audience-focused communications campaigns and plans
• Create engaging content across a range of channels and formats
• Provide expert advice on communications best practice
• Identify emerging opportunities, risks and priorities, and contribute to forward planning and annual communications activity
• Work with the Communications and Engagement team to maximise impact
• Develop relationships with local, regional and trade media
• Ensure communications are on-brand, clear, accessible and tailored to the audience
• Monitor, evaluate and report on communications activity and outcomes
• Support communications during incidents and emergencies, including an out-of-hours rota if required
• Keep up to date with communications developments to promote continuous improvement

Job description

This 12-month fixed-term maternity cover post sits in the Communications and Engagement team at Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. The post-holder is the main communications contact for designated service areas, building relationships with colleagues and senior leaders to deliver campaigns, content and expert advice. It is part-time at 22.2 hours a week and includes support for incidents, with an out-of-hours rota if required.
