Job summary

The Growth Company’s Marketing Manchester team has a new opportunity for a Communications Assistant to help deliver communications that raise Greater Manchester’s profile nationally and internationally as a leading leisure and business tourism destination.

The role is hybrid, based in our Manchester office at least one day per week, and involves planning media visits, creating press materials, monitoring coverage and building relationships with journalists and partners.

Qualifications

  • Confident communicator with excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Experience creating content for press releases, social media and online publications.
  • Ability to build relationships with media contacts, influencers and stakeholders.
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Proactive, creative, with ability to identify newsworthy opportunities.
  • Experience supporting communications, PR, marketing or media activities.
  • Degree in journalism, PR, marketing, communications or related discipline (or equivalent experience).

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate and deliver media and influencer visits, including briefs and logistics.
  • Respond to media enquiries promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain media monitoring systems and journalist databases.
  • Gather and present media coverage and report on activity.
  • Research tourism, cultural and business developments to spot opportunities.
  • Create engaging content: press releases, pitches, social media posts, editorials.
  • Provide admin support to the Media Team (reports, presentations, campaigns).
  • Build relationships with journalists, influencers, partners and stakeholders across Greater Manchester.

The Growth Company’s (GC) Marketing Manchester team have a new opportunity for a Communications Assistant to work as a member of the Media Team, to assist in delivering communications to improve the perception of Greater Manchester nationally and internationally as a leading destination for leisure and business tourism; to attract visitors and investors, grow the reputation of the region, and support economic growth.

We work to raise the profile of the region through targeted marketing campaigns, major events, and strong partnerships. We support the visitor economy by attracting tourists and high‑profile conferences, while collaborating with businesses and stakeholders to showcase the region’s unique strengths and opportunities. Through everything we do, we aim to drive economic growth and enhance Manchester’s global reputation.

This role will be hybrid working, based in our Manchester office at least one day per week.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the planning, coordination and delivery of media and influencer visits, including managing itineraries, logistics, briefing materials and stakeholder engagement.
  • Respond to media enquiries in a timely and professional manner, ensuring a high standard of communication.
  • Maintain media monitoring systems and databases to track journalist and influencer engagement, enquiries, pitches and contacts.
  • Gather, organise and present media coverage, ensuring accurate reporting and evaluation of activity.
  • Research tourism, cultural and business developments to identify opportunities that support communications activity.
  • Create engaging content, including press releases, media pitches, social media posts and editorial contributions.
  • Provide administrative support to the Media Team, including assisting with reports, presentations and campaign activity.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, influencers, tourism partners and stakeholders across Greater Manchester.
About You:
  • A confident communicator with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experienced in creating high-quality content for a range of audiences and channels, including press releases, social media and online publications.
  • Able to build and maintain positive working relationships with media contacts, influencers, partners and stakeholders.
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple priorities, projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Proactive and creative, with the ability to identify newsworthy opportunities and develop engaging stories.
  • Comfortable conducting research, analysing information and presenting findings clearly and accurately.
  • A collaborative team player with experience supporting communications, PR, marketing or media activity.
  • Educated to degree level in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications or a related discipline, or able to demonstrate equivalent experience.
Skills Required:
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and style for different audiences and platforms.
  • Strong understanding of media relations, communications and public relations principles.
  • Knowledge of influencer marketing and content creator engagement.
  • Experience of using social media platforms to support communications and media activity.
  • Strong research and information-gathering skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, CRM systems, Dropbox and social media platforms.
  • Awareness of current media, communications and digital trends.
  • Understanding of Greater Manchester's visitor economy, tourism sector and wider cultural and business offer would be advantageous.
