HV/LV Commissioning Engineer - Generalist Senior Service Representative I

Department: Power Systems Service
Reporting To: Service Representative Manager
Location: Site-Based (UK, Overseas & Offshore)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated HV/LV Commissioning Engineer to join our growing Commissioning team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery of commissioning, testing, maintenance, fault diagnosis, modification, and refurbishment activities across HV and LV electrical distribution systems, switchgear, substations, and associated critical power infrastructure up to 33kV.

This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of industrial, commercial, utility, renewable energy, critical infrastructure, data centre, defence, and power distribution projects throughout the UK and internationally.

The role is ideally suited to an engineer who enjoys hands-on commissioning, technical problem-solving, customer interaction, and working within demanding project environments while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and technical excellence.

In addition to conventional HV/LV distribution systems, the role will involve exposure to Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, protection and control systems, and critical power applications.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Delivery
  • Perform commissioning activities on HV and LV switchgear, substations, transformers, protection systems, and associated plant up to 33kV.
  • Conduct functional testing, secondary injection testing, relay configuration, and protection verification.
  • Perform installation supervision, commissioning, maintenance, modifications, refurbishment, and fault diagnosis activities.
  • Support system energisation, integration, and operational handover.
  • Lead technical investigations and resolve protection, control, and network-related defects.
  • Support commissioning activities on ATS systems, EV charging infrastructure.
  • Carry out Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) where required.
  • Assist with customer witness testing and final project acceptance.
Commissioning & Testing Activities

Carry out testing and commissioning activities including:

  • High Voltage Testing (415V to 33kV)
  • CT Magnetisation Curve Testing
  • CT Primary Injection Testing
  • VT Primary Injection Testing
  • Relay Secondary Injection Testing
  • Numerical and Electromechanical Relay Configuration
  • Protection Scheme Verification
  • Control Circuit Wiring Testing
  • Point-to-Point Wiring Verification
  • Mechanical and Electrical Functional Testing
  • Circuit Breaker Timing and Operation Testing
  • Protection and Interlocking Testing
  • Transformer Testing including:
    • Insulation Resistance Testing
    • Winding Resistance Testing
    • Ratio Testing
    • Vector Group Verification
  • G59/G99 Protection Scheme Testing
  • ATS Functional and Failure Simulation Testing
  • EV Charging System Integration and Protection Testing
Planning & Coordination
  • Ensure commissioning readiness through review of drawings, documentation, settings, and test procedures.
  • Allocate and manage commissioning activities in conjunction with project managers.
  • Provide technical support and mentoring to junior engineers where required.
Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Carry out site-specific Risk Assessments.
  • Assist in producing Method Statements and Safe Systems of Work.
  • Ensure all commissioning activities are performed in accordance with company and client safety requirements.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of electrical safety associated with live HV systems.
  • Ensure compliance with BS EN, IEC, DNO, National Grid, and client specifications.
  • Promote a positive safety culture and lead by example on all projects.
Quality & Documentation
  • Complete commissioning documentation including:
    • Test Sheets
    • Test Reports
    • Redline Drawings
    • As-Built Documentation
    • Handover Documentation
  • Review documentation produced by other engineers and provide technical feedback.
  • Document test results and produce detailed site reports.
  • Ensure reports and commissioning records are submitted within agreed timescales.
  • Verify all test equipment is calibrated, maintained, and fit for purpose.
Customer & Business Support
  • Maintain strong working relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Deliver customer training and technical support activities.
  • Assist in preparing quotations and technical proposals for site activities.
  • Promote company service offerings and identify opportunities for business growth.
  • Represent the company professionally during site works and customer engagements.
Candidate Profile
Essential Experience
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in HV/LV commissioning, protection testing, and electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience installing, commissioning, maintaining, and fault-finding on switchgear and substations up to 33kV.
  • Experience working independently and as part of a multidiscipline engineering team.
  • Experience working on UK, overseas, and offshore projects.
  • Strong background in protection and control systems commissioning.
  • Experience supervising commissioning activities and site teams.

For this UK based position, the expected pay range is GBP 50,400 - GBP 75,600 per year. This pay range includes base pay and short-term incentives. The compensation range for this full-time position applies to candidates located within the United Kingdom. Our pay ranges are determined by the local market.
