Job summary

Stewarts Christchurch Coffee Shop in Christchurch is seeking a dedicated Commis Chef to join our kitchen team. You will support the Head Chef and help prepare a range of fresh, homemade dishes using local ingredients.

This role offers a chance to develop skills across kitchen and bakery sections, in a busy, supportive environment. You’ll learn from an experienced team and contribute to a high standard of food and service for our customers.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a kitchen environment is desirable.
• Bakery or pastry experience would be an advantage but isn’t essential.
• A genuine passion for food and an interest in developing culinary skills.
• Understanding of food safety and hygiene standards.
• Ability to work calmly and efficiently in a busy environment.
• Good organisation skills and attention to detail.
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Head Chef and kitchen team with day‑to‑day preparation and cooking of food.
• Prepare fresh ingredients and assist with production of menu items.
• Help ensure food is prepared, cooked and presented to a high standard.
• Support bakery team with preparation and production of baked goods when required.
• Follow recipes and portion‑control guidelines to maintain consistency.
• Maintain a clean, tidy and well‑organised kitchen, including workstations, equipment and utensils.
• Follow all food safety, hygiene and health and safety procedures.
• Store food correctly and monitor stock levels and food quality.
• Work efficiently during busy service periods to ensure timely service.
• Work as part of the wider Coffee Shop team to provide a friendly customer experience.
• Carry out other reasonable kitchen duties as required.
