Commercial Project Leader – Building Engineering

Job summary

HDR in London seeks a Project Commercial Manager to lead the commercial and financial performance of projects from bid to close-out. You will ensure cost control, accurate forecasting, risk and opportunity management, governance and target margins, safeguarding financial performance through proactive management of scope and changes.

You will work in a client-facing environment, influence at senior levels and manage commercial risk across multi‑disciplinary projects.

Qualifications

• Ten years minimum in commercial management of projects.
• Experience monitoring contract staff or third‑party appointments desirable.
• Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint.
• Degree level or equivalent qualifications preferred.
• Incorporated status preferred and pursuing Chartered status if not yet achieved.
• Strong leadership and people management skills; able to work in a team.

Responsibilities

• Develop and own project cost control plans, establishing cost baselines, budgets, recovery plans and KPIs.
• Monitor project expenditure against budget monthly, identify variances and take corrective actions.
• Challenge project teams on resource utilisation, productivity, scope management and cost efficiency.
• Identify, quantify and document scope changes and additional services during delivery.
• Communicate scope changes to clients and manage them per contract change procedures.
• Maintain a change register tracking status, value and recovery of changes.
• Ensure no work proceeds without commercial authorization and protection.
• Lead cost reviews and commercial performance meetings with project teams.
• Identify cost overruns early and develop mitigation strategies.
• Maintain cost-to-complete forecasts and accuracy of EAC reporting.
• Manage budgets, forecasts, cash flow and financial reporting to internal and client needs.
• Monitor performance against commercial targets and mitigate risks and opportunities.
• Lead cost control, change control and commercial governance across projects.
• Report commercial performance timely to Project Managers and senior management.
