Job description

About the role

The UK has set out its ambition to be net zero by 2050 and the energy industry is responding - together we are building a cleaner, greener Britain.

At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it's so much more than that. National Grid supplies us with the environment to make it happen. As we generate momentum in the energy transition for all, we don't plan on leaving any of our customers in the dark. So, join us as a Commercial Manager, and find your superpower.

We are hiring Commercial Managers for our South, and North Regions, to cover the South-West and Wales, the South-East and North West of England.

Leading a team of Quantity Surveyors, you'll be responsible for optimising the commercial value of our construction projects, with consideration of the regulatory framework and increasing value for money for the consumer.

Ensuring compliance with contractual terms and conditions, mitigating risk, building and maintaining important relationships with key stakeholders including within our recently announced Electricity Transmission Partnership, you'll shape our contracting strategy and programme to deliver major infrastructure projects into 2030 and beyond.

What you'll do
  • You'll be influencing projects from start to finish. Supporting the transition from the commercial (pre-contract) to the contract (delivery) phase will be a key responsibility. This will also involve helping internal delivery teams understand the terms of the contract.
  • Using your experience of NEC3 or NEC4 Contracts, including cost assurance and relationship management, you'll work proactively with the contractors to identify value, as well as working through dispute resolution and mitigation.
  • You'll support and influence meetings with a range of different stakeholders including internal procurement, delivery, regulation, and legal teams, as well as external transmission system owners, customers, Contractors and DNO's.
  • Coaching, guiding and leading a team of Quantity Surveying professionals with a diverse range of experience, will be part of your role.
  • From a procurement perspective we have robust governance arrangements in place. Working with the procurement team you will use your experience of the tender process to negotiate the best possible contracting strategy.

This role offers a mixture of office, home working and travel to sites.

What you'll need
  • Experience in a commercial or financial role within a corporate environment with a solid understanding of working on infrastructure construction projects using NEC3 or NEC4 contract terms and conditions.
  • Strong understanding of contract and risk management, with a focused commercial approach supported by your analytical mindset.
  • An interest and ability to manage large teams, with colleagues spread across the UK.
  • Knowledge of working within a regulated/semi regulated environment to define strategy and commercial modelling.
  • A understanding of the energy market in relation to cables, substation, overhead lines and civils, would be highly beneficial but not essential.
  • It would also be beneficial to understand the procurement and regulatory environment in which we operate as we have regulatory obligations which impact what we do and how we do it.

Additionally, you will be great at influencing stakeholders internally and external, driven by your passion to get Britain ready for Net Zero.

What's in it for you
