Job description

Commercial Gas Trainer (Heating & Catering)

The Role

Are you an experienced commercial gas engineer who’s ready to pass on your knowledge and help develop the next generation of skilled tradespeople?

At Smart Energy Training, we deliver high-quality technical training across gas, oil, plumbing, electrical and renewable sectors – and we’re growing. We’re looking for a hands‑on and enthusiastic Commercial Gas Trainer (Heating & Catering) to join our expert team at our purpose‑built Dorset training centre.

Whether you’re an experienced trainer or a skilled commercial gas engineer looking to step away from the tools and into education, this role offers the opportunity to share your industry expertise, develop learners’ technical skills and help shape the future workforce.

You’ll primarily deliver training across commercial gas, heating and catering qualifications, with the opportunity to expand your expertise into oil heating. If you have strong commercial gas experience and a passion for developing others, we’re keen to hear from you.

We’re open to both full‑time and part‑time applications, so if you have the right technical experience but are looking for reduced hours, we’d still love to hear from you.

What you’ll be doing

  • Delivering engaging, high‑quality training across commercial gas, heating and commercial catering qualifications

  • Planning and delivering structured training aligned with relevant industry standards, qualification requirements and safety regulations

  • Delivering practical workshop sessions and classroom‑based learning covering commercial gas systems, appliances and pipework

  • Supporting learners with commercial gas safety, domestic‑to‑commercial changeover, tightness testing and purging

  • Delivering training in commercial heating appliances, including direct‑fired, indirect‑fired, overhead plaque and radiant tube appliances

  • Delivering training in commercial catering appliances, including range cookers, deep fat fryers and appliances fitted with pre‑mix air/gas burners

  • Developing your knowledge and delivering training in domestic oil‑fired heating, including relevant OFTEC qualifications, where required

  • Providing one‑to‑one and small group support to help learners achieve their qualifications and develop their technical competence

  • Assessing learner progress, providing constructive feedback and supporting learners through their assessments

  • Maintaining accurate records of learner progress and attendance

  • Working collaboratively with employers and internal teams to support learner success

  • Creating a positive, inclusive and supportive learning environment

  • Keeping up to date with changes to legislation, industry standards, appliance technology and best practice

About You

  • Strong practical experience in commercial gas, heating systems and associated appliances

  • Relevant commercial gas qualifications and experience, ideally covering areas such as COCN1, CODNCO1, CDGA1, CIGA1, CORT1, ICPN1, TPCP1A, TPCP1 and MET4

  • Experience with commercial catering qualifications such as CCCN1, CODC1, COMCAT1, COMCAT3 and COMCAT5 would be advantageous

  • Additional beneficial qualifications in Domestic Gas, LPG and Unvented Hot Water

  • A good understanding of relevant gas safety standards, regulations and safe working practices

  • A willingness to develop your knowledge of oil heating and achieve relevant OFTEC qualifications if you do not already hold them

  • A passion for supporting and developing the next generation of commercial gas, heating and catering engineers

  • Confident communication skills and the ability to explain technical information clearly

  • A patient, supportive and learner‑focused approach

  • A recognised assessor qualification, such as TAQA or equivalent, would be desirable. If you have the right industry experience but are not yet qualified, we’re happy to support you in gaining the relevant teaching and assessing qualifications

Salary and benefits

  • Up to £44,000 plus bonus (dependent on experience and qualifications)

  • 37.5 hours per week (typically Monday to Friday)

  • 25 days’ holiday plus public and bank holidays, Birthday and Christmas Eve leave

  • Career progression and development opportunities

  • Supportive and collaborative team culture

  • Modern, well‑equipped training facilities

  • Opportunity to make a lasting impact on apprentices entering the plumbing and gas industries
