Job description

Role profile

We are seeking a Commercial Disputes (Senior) Knowledge Lawyer to support the Commercial Disputes Service Line within our Disputes & Risk Practice Group.

In this role you will work closely with the Head of Disputes & Risk Knowledge to build out the knowledge function for the Service Line, thinking strategically about how best to deliver relevant and effective knowhow and training, and support business development initiatives.

You will track and disseminate technical and market developments, and act as expert counsel to fee earners, supporting them to deliver the best possible service to clients.

This role can be based in either our Bristol or London office. We are happy to consider candidates on a 4 day or full time basis.

The team

You will join our close-knit Disputes & Risk Knowledge Team, which includes four Knowledge Lawyers and a Knowledge Paralegal. You will also work closely with other Knowledge Lawyers from across the Firm's innovative and market leading Knowledge Team.

The Commercial Disputes Service Line

Our Disputes & Risk Practice Group comprises 46 partners and 126 other fee earners spread across our Bristol, London, and Thames Valley offices.

The Group is divided into six service lines: Commercial Disputes, Construction Disputes, Property Disputes, IP Disputes, Regulatory Disputes, and Restructuring & Insolvency.

The Commercial Disputes Service Line consists of 18 partners and 39 other fee earners. It handles a wide range of commercial disputes, including tech disputes, cybersecurity, data and privacy disputes, financial services/regulatory disputes, business crime disputes, corporate disputes, competition disputes, crisis/reputation management, insurance and reinsurance disputes, tax disputes, professional negligence disputes, international and domestic arbitrations, and investigations.

Technical skills and experience

We are looking for someone with strong knowledge of civil procedure and the key substantive areas of law relevant to commercial disputes (contract law, tort law, conflicts of laws, etc.).

You will also have:

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical legal issues clearly and professionally and a good understanding of how knowledge is acquired by the lawyer and client audience.
  • Confidence in your expertise, with the ability to problem-solve, make decisions, and progress work swiftly without unnecessary process.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team, building relationships with fee earners, other knowledge lawyers, and stakeholders in other relevant functions.
  • Demonstrated interest in and enthusiasm for Knowledge (prior experience as a Knowledge Lawyer is not required).
  • Interest in and willingness to learn about legal technology and how it can drive efficiencies and innovation.

Key responsibilities

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Head of D&R Knowledge with the development and implementation of knowledge strategy for both the Service Line and the wider Group, including initiatives to improve the collection and dissemination of knowhow, engage fee earners with knowledge projects, and utilise technology to drive efficiencies and innovation.
  • Maintaining the Service Line's precedent collection and repository of useful live matter-generated knowhow.
  • Delivering the Service Line's training programme, including trainee training, NQ training, knowledge content for monthly team meetings, and ad hoc training on key areas.
  • Supporting the Service Line's BD initiatives, including identifying areas of interest for clients and contributing to/delivering external publications and client training.
  • Keeping the Service Line updated on technical and market developments through regular, reader-friendly written internal updates.
  • Addressing queries from fee earners on current law and practice, from within the Service Line, the wider D&R Group, and the wider Firm.

Salary and benefits

We offer competitive salaries and generous benefits. We value the health and wellbeing of our people and our wide range of initiatives and benefits support this.
