Job summary

Tata Steel's Trostre Works in Llanelli is seeking an experienced Combustion Engineer with a strong track record in heavy industry, COMAH compliance, and control loop tuning. The role requires full UK rights to work and involves leadership across site combustion systems.

You will lead system upgrades, evaluate unit capabilities, manage MOC processes, and work with the Energy & Environmental team to ensure compliant operations and energy forecasting. Start ASAP pending medical/drug screening.

Qualifications

• Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Experience in heavy industry, steel/tinplate preferred.
• Fault-finding in complex industrial gas, air, electrical and instrumentation systems.
• IEMA Associate level or equivalent knowledge.
• Experience with site permits, emissions and environmental compliance.
• Strong ability to translate technical concepts for operators and leadership.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Serve as site technical authority for combustion systems.
• Evaluate unit capabilities and drive hazard identification.
• Lead COMAH, DSEAR/Ex and environmental compliance strategies.
• Deliver end-to-end combustion system upgrades and maintain SOPs.
• Ensure optimal control loop tuning and MOC alignment with QA/safety standards.
• Collaborate with Energy & Environmental teams on ISO 14001 compliance and energy forecasting.
• Provide hands-on problem solving and on-site training.

Job description

Are you an experienced combustion or thermal process engineer?

Do you consider yourself to be a subject matter expert in manufacturing combustion systems, COMAH compliance and control loop tuning?

Are you based in or around Llanelli?

A permanent opportunity for an experienced combustion or thermal process Engineer with tenure in the Heavy industry sector at the Trostre Steelworks. Tata Steel's historic Trostre Works manufactures over 400,000 tonnes of high-quality steel packaging every year.

On this occasion, only applicants holding full Right To Work in the UK already in place can be considered.

Role: Combustion Engineer

Location: Tata Steel, Maes-Ar-Ddafen Road, Llanelli SA14 9SD

Salary: competitive and based on experience

Shifts: Mon-Fri (days) 36.5 hours per week

Start: ASAP but pending the successful completion of a medical assessment, which does include a Drug and Alcohol test

Responsibilities:

• Serving as the site technical authority for all manufacturing combustion systems
• Evaluating unit capabilities
• Driving hazard identification
• Leading COMAH, DSEAR/Ex (EIS 7), and environmental compliance strategies
• Leading the end-to-end delivery of combustion system upgrades
• Maintaining standard operating procedures
• Ensuring optimal control loop tuning
• Managing rigorous Management of Change (MOC) processes to guarantee alignment with internal QA and international safety standards
• Reliability & Maintenance Optimisation
• Partnering with the Energy & Environmental team to handle ISO 14001 compliance, EA permit reporting, and energy forecasting, while embedding best practice across all operating units
• Providing hands-on problem-solving
• Acting as the central point of contact for operational queries, and design training programs to elevate on-site technical competency

Essential requirements:

• Degree educated in a relevant Engineering discipline (or equivalent experience)
• Strong track record in heavy industry, ideally within Steel and Tinplate manufacturing operation
• Previous experience within fault-finding of complex industrial gas, air, electrical, and instrumentation control systems as well as maintenance, and modification.
• IEMA Associate level (or equivalent knowledge)
• Expertise in managing air and water emissions, waste streams, site permits, and public health/environmental compliance
• Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable guidance for operators, engineers, and executive leadership
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Strong industrial computing skill
