Job summary

Primary Coding Clubs is seeking a session leader to run coding clubs for children aged 8–11 from our Brackley HQ and across three counties. You will guide up to 20 children through our ready‑to‑use plans, manage equipment, and keep sessions engaging and inclusive.

You must be reliable with strong communication, enjoy working with children, and be prepared to obtain an enhanced DBS check. A clean UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential as clubs operate across sites.

Responsibilities

• Lead weekly coding club sessions for up to 20 children using prepared session plans.
• Set up and pack down equipment (iPads, robots, laptops, physical kit).
• Manage behaviour, pace and participation to include every child.
• Record attendance and track badge/logbook progress.
• Be a friendly, professional presence for staff and parents at pick‑up.
• Flag kit issues, safeguarding concerns, and any child needing support.
• Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and behaviour policies.

Job description

Primary Coding Clubs runs hands-on coding clubs for children aged 7–11, at lunchtime, after school and out of school, in primary schools across Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire and at our own HQ in Brackley.

Every club is screen-balanced and built around a badge and logbook system that gives children something real to work towards — from their first lines of code to robots, games and physical computing. We want every child to have a go, not just the ones who already own a laptop, and we're especially keen to get more girls coding early.

We design everything ourselves — the session plans, the kit, the resources — so the people leading our clubs can focus entirely on the children in front of them.

Primary Coding Clubs is part of Primary Coding League CIC, a community interest company.

The Role

You will lead coding club sessions in primary schools, taking a group of up to 20 children aged 8–11 through our existing session plans. You are not writing curriculum and you are not building resources from scratch - that is our job. Your job is to run a brilliant session: keep the room engaged, keep every child moving forward, and make sure they leave wanting to come back next week.

Sessions run at lunchtime and after school during term time. You will need to travel between school sites, so a car and a clean UK driving licence are essential.

What you will be doing

• Leading weekly coding club sessions for up to 20 children aged 8–11, using our prepared session plans and resources
• Setting up and packing down equipment — iPads, robots, laptops and physical kit
• Managing behaviour, pace and participation so every child in the room is included and progressing
• Recording attendance and awarding badges and logbook progress
• Being a friendly, professional face for Primary Coding Clubs with school staff and parents at pick‑up
• Flagging anything we need to know — kit issues, safeguarding concerns, a child who is struggling or a child who is flying
• Following our safeguarding, health and safety and behaviour policies at all times

Who we are looking for

• Experience working with children in a structured setting— school, club, coaching, youth group or similar
• Strong behaviour management with 8–11 year olds— you can hold a room of 20 without raising your voice
• Reliability— you turn up, on time, every week, and you tell us early if you cannot
• Good communication— with children, with school staff, with parents and with us
• Warmth and patience— children who find it hard get the same energy as the children who find it easy
• The right values and ethos— you believe every child deserves access to this, not just the ones who already own a laptop
• An enhanced DBS check— or willingness to obtain one before starting (we will support this)
• A clean UK driving licence and access to a vehicle— clubs are spread across three counties
• Prior coding, computing or STEM experience — Scratch, Python, micro:bit, LEGO Education, robotics
• Confidence troubleshooting tech on the fly — devices that will not connect, apps that will not load
• Adaptability and the ability to improvise when a session does not go to plan
• Qualified Teacher Status or a primary PGCE — genuinely a nice to have, not a requirement. Right fit matters more

What we offer

• A flat rate per session rather than an hourly rate, so setup, packdown and travel are paid — you are not paid for one hour and giving up three
• A higher rate for clubs further from your base, and a rate review once you are established and running several clubs
• All session content, equipment and kit provided — no planning time, no prep from scratch
• Full induction, safeguarding and child protection training delivered by us
• A proper handover before you take anything on solo (see below)
• Regular, predictable term-time work, starting at 3 sessions a week and growing to 6–8 for the right person, with first refusal on new clubs as we open them
• The chance to be part of something with a genuine social purpose, not just another contract

How we start you off

• Taster —one paid session at our Brackley HQ club, shadowing. A chance for you to see the job properly and for us to see you with children, before either of us commits
• Stage 1 —two to three further sessions at HQ, co-delivering and learning the kit and the content. This can begin while your DBS check is processing, as you will be supervised throughout
• Stage 2 —two sessions at the school you will take on. We lead one, you lead the other
• Stage 3 —the club is yours, with a check-in after your first solo week and a direct line whenever you need it

You will be paid at the full session rate throughout. Once you are established, there is scope to take on additional clubs as we open new sites.
