Job summary

Thorlabs in Ely is recruiting a CNC Programmer to support R&D and Manufacturing with programming and machining of new components. You will program, set up and run 3-axis and 5-axis milling centres, while collaborating with R&D to improve component manufacturability and efficiency.

The role requires precision in a high-mix, low-volume environment and experience with Fanuc/Haas controls. Training in Vericut is provided and knowledge of CAD/CAM tools (SolidWorks, Mastercam) is preferred.

Qualifications

Apprenticeship trained or similar experience considered.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Machine Shop environment.
Experienced in 3-axis and 5-axis milling with minimised downtime (SMED, zero-point work holding).
Experience with Sliding Head Lathes desirable.
Experience with Wire Erosion desirable but not essential.
Experience with micron-level precision for setup and machining.
Understanding engineering drawings and implementing machining methods.

Responsibilities

Program, set-up and run 3-axis and 5-axis milling centres to produce precision components from various materials.
Set-up and run turning and Wire EDM CNC machines with appropriate training if required.
Use Vericut to digitally prove-out components prior to first-off machining.
Collaborate with R&D and Manufacturing to improve manufacturability and efficiency.
Ensure parts meet drawing tolerances using metrology tools.
Maintain machine performance and optimize tooling and work-holding processes.
Follow safe working and environmental requirements and participate in Lean initiatives.
