Clinical Nurse Specialist Peritoneal Dialysis – Inpatient Services

We are excited to recruit an Inpatient Peritoneal Dialysis Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our Renal Services Team. This newly created role will focus on delivering high-quality, person-centred care to inpatients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), including those requiring unplanned renal replacement therapy.

As a key member of the renal multidisciplinary team (MDT), the Inpatient Peritoneal Dialysis CNS will provide expert clinical intervention to support patients, enhance care pathways, and reduce hospital admissions. The role will involve:

Attending board rounds with the inpatient MDT to proactively identify and manage PD patients.

Providing early clinical intervention to optimise care and shorten hospital stays.

Delivering an outreach service to PD patients admitted to non-renal specialist wards.

Working closely with the Renal Assessment Unit (RAU) to prevent unnecessary inpatient admissions

You will also collaborate with both the Renal Accelerated Kidney Care Clinic (AKCC) and the RAU to ensure a seamless service for patients exploring renal replacement therapy options. This includes supporting patients who are unsure about their renal supportive care pathway and educating them about PD as a treatment choice. Additionally, for patients requiring unplanned renal replacement therapy, you will play a vital role in assessing their suitability for peritoneal dialysis as a first-line treatment.

Main duties of the job

Beyond direct patient care, the Inpatient PD CNS will be instrumental in staff development and education, providing specialist training, mentorship, and clinical support to nurses and multidisciplinary staff managing PD patients. You will ensure continuity of care, uphold high standards of clinical practice, and empower patients and staff through knowledge-sharing, education, and collaboration.

The post holder will also take on a leadership role in coordinating and supervising a small team of clinical staff, fostering a multi-disciplinary, supportive, and learning-focused environment. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate records and documentation, ensuring all activities align with legislation, policies, and best practices

This post will be of potential interest to staff who are working at Band 6 or 7, and have experience of working in peritoneal dialysis in either inpatient or outpatient services, and wish to progress and apply their expertise in a stimulating clinical environment. We can offer strong support for development within an expert team, you will be supported by the expertise of both the peritoneal dialysis and Renal Teams in your new role.
