Clinical Lead Speech & Language Therapist

This is a 12 monthfixed term post to cover maternity leave. You will support our high riskpatients who require a fast response in order to prevent hospital admissionswhere possible. This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative and widelyexperienced therapist to join the countywide Worcestershire Adult Speech andLanguage Therapy (SLT) Service, which covers Community Hospitals, Out-patientClinics and Specialist Teams, with the aim of providing the optimumevidence-based service for the people of Worcestershire.

This is a Part time post working 30.75 hours for Fast Response negotiable hours to fit with individual needs and the needs of the service, where the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing this caseload and coordinating responses to patients in urgent need. You will support students and junior colleagues as well as advising the Service Lead in your area of expertise and in relation to National Guidance for disorders and conditions managed by SLT.

Clinically, you willprovide highly specialist assessment, diagnosis and case management for clientswith a range of communication disorders and dysphagia related to a variety ofdiagnoses and will maintain your own caseload.

You will be supported with excellent management and clinical supervisionin this post, which is based in the north of the county.

Main duties of the job

You will be integral tothe continued development of the Service into a high performing, well respectedprovider of timely, safe and effective Speech and Language Therapy for ourpatients, therefore we require an ambitious and creative individual who isself-driven, displays excellent leadership skills, and who also works wellwithin a team.

Atypical day will involve overseeing and managing a caseload of fast responsereferrals, prioritising and coordinating visits across the county as well asassessing and managing patients within this client group yourself, alerting theservice lead of any potential concerns regarding capacity and demand.

Youwill support and supervise less experienced colleagues in the development oftheir clinical skills in this area; communicate with families and carers; liaisewith other members of the team and MDT colleagues; support student placements; providein service training for SLT colleagues and other professions in areas relatedto SLT; conduct audits as required by the service and the Trust; and progressthe quality agenda including attendance at SDU quality meetings for highlyspecialist staff.

Youwill also maintain a small general caseload based in the north of the county,working at a highly specialist level.

Job responsibilities

Assess, develop and implement specialist Speech and Language Therapytreatment.

Provide advice to othersregarding the management and care of patients with communication and/or eating,drinking and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).

Act as a designated resource for the clinicalspecialties, providing clinical advice to other members of the Service.

Possess advanced levelprofessional qualification in dysphagia management and/or comparable level ofcompetence.

Communicate complex, sensitive and/or contentiouscondition-related information from assessment to patients, carers, and membersof multi-professional teams.

Write reports reflecting highly specialist knowledge.

Employ counselling skills with patients/carers withhighly complex needs.

Demonstrate ability to reflect on practice and facilitatethis ability in others.

Experience
  • Demonstrable recent experience of working with adults in specified area of specialism.
  • Recent experience of working at highly specialist level for dysphagia
  • Experience of working with adults with a full range of communication disorders in outpatient clinic settings
  • Experience of delivering specialist training and presentations (formal and informal)
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
Qualifications
  • Degree, or equivalent qualification, giving eligibility to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist
  • Current HCPC Registration
  • Current Membership of the RCSLT
  • Relevant CPD and structured personally-directed learning at a specialist level of knowledge and skills, evidenced by a learning portfolio.
  • Advanced dysphagia qualification or evidence of comparable level of competence
  • Evidence of competence in cervical auscultation.
  • I understand that I will be asked to provide original certificates to verify my qualifications at point of offer.
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially for the communication of complex and sensitive information with patients, carers and other professionals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with patients who are psychologically or emotionally distressed.
  • Excellent prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to be a good team member and to progress objectives as part of a whole Service team, but also to take a lead role for projects and initiatives as relevant.
  • Ability to synthesise information and through analytical processes produce and deliver complex treatment programmes.
Knowledge
  • Highly specialist knowledge of a range of relevant assessment and therapeutic techniques for this client group.
  • Knowledge of the professional standards of documentation.
  • Knowledge of the work and assistance available from the voluntary sector in client care relevant to this post.
  • Understanding of the confidential nature of the post.
