You will join a busy surgical unit in a large acute hospital Trust of around 1,000 beds, serving a resident population of approximately 550,000 and providing a wide range of elective / emergency surgical procedures. You will join our team of trainees and have the opportunity to undertake training in line with their professional and developmental needs. The Department of Emergency General Surgery is new to the Trust and part of a new developing specialty nationally. This unit has one of the busiest Emergency Surgical admissions nationwide with one of the highest numbers of laparotomies undertaken according to NELA. The Trust is a Major Trauma Unit and accepts single system trauma injuries only. The Emergency General Surgical Unit is currently run by a team of 20 laparoscopic GI surgeons, 9 Colorectal, 6 Emergency Surgeons and 5 UGI/Bariatric/General
Main duties of the jobThe Department offers a full range of laparoscopic general, benign Upper GI surgery which includes laparoscopic Bile duct explorations and a large bariatric practice, and a well nurtured colorectal cancer practice including eLAPE, Transanal (TEO / TEMS / TATME). This post would suit trainees wishing to consolidate their skills within the emergency general surgical remit and expand their emergency laparoscopic experience .
Principal responsibilities will include supporting the new Emergency General Surgical department through participation in a 1 in 15 rota general surgical On Call with a lean towards the care of acute surgical patients. This will be supplemented by an increase in Emergency operating as well as elective theatre time The Trust offers three state-of-the-art dedicated fully integrated laparoscopic theatres (two at RCH; one at WCH). The post will be based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, although you will be required to work at the other RCHT sites including West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance.
This post will provide day time ward cover and take part in the night on call rota.
