Job Summary

An exciting opportunity is available for a Duty Manager to join our team at the prestigious King Edward VII’s Hospital. The Duty Manager supports the senior leadership team in the safe and effective running of the hospital 24/7 and has responsibilities including coordinating patient flow, responding to major incident situations, holding Fire Officer responsibility, and providing senior support to clinical and non-clinical departments. The role also involves supporting the unplanned admissions pathway to ensure seamless patient referral and admission.

This position requires an experienced duty manager or an experienced nurse at sister/charge nurse/ward manager level seeking a new challenge. The successful candidate will collaborate across departments to promote excellence, safety, and high-quality patient care, while ensuring policies and procedures are followed.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Monitor and supervise hospital operations, including patient flow, bed management, and resource allocation.
  2. Provide senior nursing support and professional advice across the hospital.
  3. Act as the first point of contact during out-of-hours for clinical and non-clinical departments, liaising with on-call managers.
  4. Manage initial responses to major incidents and serious untoward incidents outside normal hours.
  5. Serve as Fire Controller during fire alarms, coordinating with fire services.
  6. Participate in the hospital's cardiac arrest team, ensuring effective resuscitation responses.
  7. Collaborate with departmental heads to improve workflows and patient care.
  8. Address issues with a risk-sensitive approach and promote safety culture.
  9. Maintain a professional presence and build relationships with GPs and consultants to foster confidence in the hospital.
  10. Challenge unsafe practices and escalate concerns appropriately.
  11. Ensure incident reports are completed promptly.
  12. Manage stressful situations effectively and work under pressure.
  13. Follow safeguarding policies and act as a resource for staff.
  14. Regularly inspect the premises for safety, addressing faults and maintenance issues.
  15. Conduct hospital walkabouts during night shifts to ensure safety and compliance.
  16. Coordinate discharges and ensure timely patient departure and documentation.
  17. Lead patient rounding to ensure safety and satisfaction.
  18. Provide excellent customer service and maintain professionalism.
  19. Address patient, visitor, and staff concerns, escalating as necessary.
  20. Complete duty logs and manage unplanned admissions safely, ensuring payment confirmation prior to admission.
  21. Serve as the first contact for external agencies at night.
  22. Manage communications about incidents with authorized personnel only.
  23. Lead the twice-daily bed meetings.
Professional Development

Stay updated with nursing developments, promote policy compliance, and foster a culture of continuous quality improvement using audits and feedback.

Clinical Responsibilities

Ensure proper medication management, support clinical care including phlebotomy, cannulation, IV drug administration, and liaise with medical teams to ensure appropriate patient care.

Management

Maintain duty rotas, support investigations into incidents and complaints, attend relevant meetings, and ensure a safe working environment in compliance with health and safety guidelines.

Education

Engage in continuous learning and attend relevant courses to maintain and enhance skills.

Measurements

Monitor KPIs, ensure resource efficiency, policy compliance, patient satisfaction, and adherence to guidelines like NICE.
