Job Description:

Introduction

Are you an experienced Clinical, Counselling or Forensic Psychologist looking to take the next step in your career? If so, join The Spinney Hospital in Atherton, Manchester. This is an opportunity to change lives for the better and help some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Working within the Psychology department at the Spinney, you will be able to offer your expertise and experience of working with people in a forensic mental health setting. Most importantly, you will be a valued staff member, and your career with us will be enjoyable and rewarding as you develop specialist skills throughout your time at The Spinney.

You will work closely with the wider MDT colleagues in Nursing, Allied Health Professionals (Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Dietician), Social Workers, Physical Health, and Psychiatry to provide multi-disciplinary support.

As part of your role, you will report to the Lead Psychologist and will be responsible for delivering evidence-based individual and group interventions, cognitive assessments, MDT working, and risk assessments. You will also facilitate staff reflective practice sessions, providing a space for staff to reflect and develop, using the heads and hearts model.

This role offers opportunities to build and develop skills in person-centred care, consultation, team working, assessment, formulation, therapy, risk management, service development, leadership, and research.

We support your personal and professional development through monthly CPD sessions within our department, quarterly regional CPD days, access to external training, and externally facilitated reflective practice sessions.

It is a career that brings pride and fulfillment, embodying the essence of delivering great healthcare.

As a Clinical/Counselling/Forensic Psychologist, you will be:

  • Providing specialist psychological assessments, formulations, and evidence-based interventions for individuals with complex mental health issues.
  • Contributing to risk management, care planning, and decision-making with psychological perspectives.
  • Communicating complex information to colleagues, service users, carers, and other professionals to support wellbeing, safeguarding, and risk assessments.
  • Promoting open and supportive team cultures.
  • Managing a complex caseload within a multidisciplinary team and facilitating group interventions.
  • Monitoring clinical progress through regular reviews.
  • Providing clinical supervision to assistant psychologists and trainees.
  • Supporting staff development through training, consultation, and reflective sessions.
  • Contributing to service development initiatives.
  • Receiving supervision from the Lead Psychologist and other team members.
  • Being responsible and accountable for all aspects of clinical work, maintaining high standards of care in line with HCPC guidelines and policies.

To be successful, you will need:

  • Postgraduate/Doctorate qualification (or soon to qualify) as a Clinical, Forensic, or Counselling Psychologist.
  • Current HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Experience with complex assessments, formulations, and treatments of mental health conditions.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management.
  • Experience engaging with vulnerable populations and managing risk and uncertainty.
  • Post-qualification training in therapeutic models relevant to forensic mental health (or interest in pursuing such training).
  • Experience supervising colleagues and facilitating reflective practice.
  • Experience applying psychology across diverse cultural contexts.

Where you will be working:

The Spinney hospital in Atherton offers secure services, rehabilitation, and PICU, with facilities like a swimming pool, gym, workshops, and gardens. The environment promotes staff retention and wellbeing.

What you will get:

  • Annual salary of £57,200
  • 33 days annual leave (including Bank Holidays) plus your birthday off
  • Free meals and parking
  • Wellbeing support and activities
  • Career development and training opportunities
