Job description

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is the biggest employer in Nottingham with over 19,000 staff

This is an exciting opportunity in Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust working remotely full time. You will be an Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) or have several years' experience working as a Clinical Coder. Working as part of a large team, you will abstract and analyse clinical information from digitised case notes, other relevant documents, hospital electronic systems and translate into diagnostic and operative procedure codes using the current classifications, adhering to the national standards and conventions, inputting the data on to the Trust’s patient information system to meet the Trust’s financial and statistical data commitments.

You’ll need the ability to work independently, code accurately to national coding guidelines with little or no supervision and organise/prioritise your own day to day work requirements. You’ll be physically capable of sitting for prolonged periods, using computer systems.

There may be an opportunity for the right candidate to be recruited to a B3 Clinical Coder post if all criteria for the higher clinical coding post not quite met.

Main duties of the job
  1. Abstract and analyse relevant clinical data from a variety of manual and computerised sources, including digitised case notes, laboratory reports and discharge summaries.
  2. Ensure that complex clinical data regarding diagnoses and surgical procedures on patient episodes is coded using national (OPCS-4) and international (ICD-10) or any other classifications that may be implemented in the future adhering to all national standards and conventions.
  3. Input coded clinical information into the Trust’s patient information system in conjunction with a clinical encoder ensuring accuracy, completeness and timeliness at all times.
  4. Liaise closely with the data quality team to ensure correct episode data on patient hospital system.
  5. Work within deadlines whilst maintaining a high quality of accuracy and completeness of clinical coding.
  6. Effectively manage assigned workload.
  7. Continue professional education and undertake personal professional development in order to refresh clinical coding skills. Keep up to date on changes to code assignment, coding methodology and local policy amendments to ensure coding reflects the activity of the trust.
  8. Participate in in-house audits to promote the accuracy and consistency of clinical coding and the representation of activity and case-mix within the Trust.
  9. Maintain confidentiality of all coded and other patient information.

Person specification
Training and Qualifications
  • NCCQ - Accredited Clinical Coder
  • To have at least 5 GCSE's or equivalent Educational qualifications
  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience as a Clinical Coder with documented evidence of formal training and competency achievement gained or formal refresher training
Experience
  • Have experience Clinical Coding working in a NHS hospital setting.
  • Ability to code accurately and to national coding guidelines with little or no supervision
Other skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use own judgement to interpret & summarise relevant clinical terminology
  • Organisation/prioritisation of own day to day work requirements
  • Be able to work remotely
