Job description

Clinical Applications Specialist – Diagnostics & Urology

Role Overview

The Clinical Applications Specialist will act as the clinical lead for a growing urology portfolio, with a novel point-of-care urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnostic test at the centre of the role. The position will also provide medical support for treatments used in bladder instillation and the prevention of recurrent UTIs.

Working alongside the commercial team, the post holder will lead the clinical implementation of the diagnostic test across NHS and private hospitals, supporting integration into clinical pathways, staff training and ongoing site engagement. The role will also provide first-line medical information, develop relationships with key clinical stakeholders and contribute to real-world evidence supporting product adoption.

The initial focus will be on urology, with opportunities to expand into obstetrics as the portfolio grows.

Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Implementation & Applications
  • Lead the clinical aspects of implementing point-of-care diagnostic testing at NHS and private hospital sites.
  • Integrate testing into local UTI pathways, clinical workflows and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Deliver on-site user training and certification, maintaining appropriate training records.
  • Conduct structured 30-, 60- and 90-day follow-ups to assess implementation, resolve issues and support adoption.
  • Work with hospital clinicians and laboratory teams to overcome implementation challenges and embed testing into routine practice.
  • Develop and maintain accurate, up-to-date clinical training materials.
2. Clinical Support & Medical Information
  • Act as the first point of contact for clinical and scientific queries across the product portfolio.
  • Provide accurate medical information to healthcare professionals, nurses and internal teams, in line with approved product information and instructions for use (IFUs).
  • Advise on the appropriate use of point-of-care testing and when laboratory culture or further investigation may be required.
  • Escalate complex clinical queries and detailed result interpretation where appropriate.
  • Support the commercial team in developing product knowledge and clinical competence.
  • Identify, develop and maintain relationships with key clinical stakeholders across urology, microbiology and obstetrics.
  • Build engagement with relevant professional bodies and clinical networks.
  • Support advisory boards and represent the clinical aspects of the portfolio at national congresses, conferences and regional meetings.
  • Maintain a structured clinical stakeholder engagement plan.
4. Evidence Generation & Clinical Audit
  • Support the design and delivery of service evaluations and clinical audits across NHS and private hospital sites.
  • Assist with the collection, collation and quality-checking of post-marketing and real-world clinical data.
  • Contribute to the publication strategy and evidence base supporting clinical adoption, market access and potential future NICE/health technology assessment (HTA) engagement.
5. Compliance & Medical Materials
  • Support the review of clinical and educational materials for medical accuracy and compliance with relevant industry codes, including ABPI and ABHI requirements.
  • Follow and contribute to the maintenance of relevant medical SOPs.
  • Support applicable Good Distribution Practice (GDP) and MHRA compliance requirements relevant to the clinical field role.
6. Pharmacovigilance Support
  • Identify, document and forward adverse event reports in accordance with internal SOPs and MHRA guidance.
  • Provide appropriate product information to healthcare professionals and support the wider pharmacovigilance function.
  • Professional credibility in a clinical or scientific setting, with the ability to engage confidently with consultant-level clinicians and microbiologists.
  • Relevant clinical or scientific experience, ideally as an HCPC-registered biomedical scientist, clinical scientist or microbiologist, or within urology or women's health.
  • Hands-on experience implementing point-of-care testing within NHS secondary care.
  • Understanding of POCT governance, including POCT committees, quality control, external quality assessment (EQA), connectivity and relevant IVDR/UKCA requirements.
  • Working knowledge of relevant healthcare compliance guidelines and industry codes, including ABPI and ABHI.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to customer sites across the UK.
  • Experience supporting pharmaceutical or medical device products in a medical affairs, clinical applications or field-based role.
  • Experience delivering clinical training and implementing new diagnostic technologies within hospitals.
  • Involvement in service evaluations, clinical audits, real-world evidence generation or publications.
  • Experience working with NHS stakeholders across urology, microbiology or obstetrics.
