Qualifications

  • PhD in a scientific discipline with expertise in atmospheric perils and climate change.
  • Strong programming, scripting, and data analysis in Python, R, or similar tools.
  • Extensive experience in risk modelling, validation, and critique of catastrophe models.
  • Excellent communication skills for reports, presentations, and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to manage small research projects independently and deliver results.
  • Strong network-building with academia, external partners, and internal teams.
  • In-depth understanding of current and emerging risks in the insurance sector, including pricing practices.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance and capital modelling, and how catastrophe risk affects pricing.

Responsibilities

  • Support analytical reviews and validation of catastrophe models focusing on atmospheric perils and climate change impacts.
  • Develop and refine risk assessment techniques for catastrophe risk quantification.
  • Translate external scientific research into actionable practices, product development, and risk management strategies.
  • Conduct independent scientific research aligned with AXA UK’s business interests and risk profile.
  • Manage small research projects from initiation to completion with internal and external collaborators.
  • Foster relationships with academia and external partners, managing research activities and collaborations.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to insurance professionals and senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with second line Risk teams to ensure exposure inputs/outputs are accurate and aligned with risk management.
  • Contribute to ongoing development and validation of internal catastrophe models including reinsurance controls.
  • Work with Reinsurance team to generate insights for portfolio management, pricing, and optimization.
