Job summary

XPO is launching a Driver Training Programme at its Widnes site for newly qualified HGV drivers. From day one you will be employed and mentored, building the skills and confidence to become a professional Class 1 driver.

During training you’ll earn £15.00 per hour, then progress to driver rates ranging from £17.56 to £21.47 per hour depending on shift pattern. Benefits include a pension, holiday pay, and flexible shifts across a 24/7 operation.

Qualifications

• You must have a valid C+E (Class 1) licence.
• No more than 6 penalty points.
• No DD, DR or IN endorsements.
• Willingness to learn and develop your skills.

Responsibilities

• Learn hands‑on driving techniques and safety procedures.
• Shadow experienced Class 1 drivers and mentors.
• Complete the driver training programme and achieve full qualification.
• Transition to a permanent driver role on Tesco contract at Widnes site.

Finding that first Class 1 driving role can be tough. Most companies want experience, but how do you get experience if nobody gives you the opportunity?

That's where XPO's Driver Training Programme comes in.

We've created a unique programme designed specifically for newly qualified HGV drivers. Our experienced trainers and driver mentors will help you build the skills, confidence, and real-world experience you need to become a professional Class 1 driver.

From day one, you'll be employed by XPO and supported every step of the way. Once you've successfully completed your training, you'll join our Tesco contract as a fully qualified Class 1 Driver based at our Widnes site.

You'll start on £15.00 per hour while completing your training. Once you've successfully passed and are operating independently, you'll move onto our professional driver rates of £17.56 to £21.47 per hour (depending on shift pattern).

What will you learn?

Our Driver Programme is designed to bridge the gap between gaining your licence and becoming a confident professional driver. You'll gain hands-on experience in:

• Vehicle manoeuvring and safe driving techniques
• Load securing
• Driver paperwork and compliance
• Customer and site procedures
• Best practices from experienced professional drivers

You'll spend time shadowing experienced members of our driver team, learning the practical skills that can't be taught in a classroom.
