Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority seeks a Civil Engineer (Design Authority) for an 8-month hybrid contract at West Burton. You will define the civil engineering strategy, design basis and integration vision for facilities, buildings and infrastructure enabling the powerplant.

You will lead programme-level objectives and decision principles to ensure a safe, high-performing, constructable, and sustainable prototype.

On behalf of UKAEA (UK Atomic Energy Authority) we are looking for a Civil Engineer (Design Authority) (INSIDE IR35) for an 8 month hybrid contract based in West Burton.UKAEA run the UK’s national fusion energy research programme, sponsored by the Government’s Department for Energy Security & Net Zero. They are on a mission to deliver safe, sustainable, low-carbon energy from fusion, achieving maximum scientific and economic benefit along the way.As a Civil Engineer (Design Authority), your main responsibilities will be to:* Define and own the civil engineering strategy, design basis and integration vision for all facilities, buildings and infrastructure required to enable the powerplant.* Establish programme-level objectives, architectural requirements and decision principles that guide the development of a safe, high-performing, constructable and sustainable prototype.* Ensure the design evolves with clear direction, aligning with the programme’s goals and long-term vision.* Develop inventive strategies to address design gaps, interface uncertainty and differing levels of technical maturity between plant systems and civil facilities.* Resolve cross-disciplinary conflicts, negotiate trade-offs and determine integrated design positions that maintain whole-plant coherence and programme delivery integrity.* Define and implement policies, strategies, and standards for civil engineering design, establishing governance to ensure organisational adherence.Essential:* Chartered Engineer (CEng), preferably Fellow (FICE) of the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent professional institution.* Proven ability to translate complex technical challenges into clear strategies, actions and delivery scope.* Experience converting uncertain or evolving system requirements into robust design basis, technical requirements and delivery-ready solutions.* Demonstrated leadership of complex systems engineering, including requirements derivation, verification and validation (V&V).* Accountable for major capital infrastructure technical scope within complex, high-hazard or highly regulated environments.* Experience delivering engineering, technical assurance and/or construction in regulated or high-hazard sectors, including heavy structures (preferably civil nuclear and/or defence).Please be aware that this role can only be worked within the UK and not Overseas.In applying for this role, you acknowledge the following \"this role falls in scope of the Off Payroll Working in the Public Sector legislation.
