The role combines senior leadership, client liaison and collaboration with project managers, contractors and consultants to deliver safe, high-quality outcomes for major infrastructure schemes.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Design Manager, Senior Design Engineer or similar.
• Background in water, wastewater, utilities, civil engineering or infrastructure.
• Experience leading a design team or managing design activity.
• Strong knowledge of civil/infrastructure design principles and standards.
• Practical understanding of CDM 2015 and Principal Designer responsibilities.

Job description

A leading and rapidly expanding UK infrastructure business is looking to appoint an experienced Design Manager to join its water division.

The business delivers major civil engineering, utility and infrastructure projects across the UK and has a strong reputation for safe, high-quality and innovative project delivery.

This is a senior opportunity for a Design Manager with experience in water, wastewater, utilities or civil infrastructure who is looking to take responsibility for an in-house design team and a varied portfolio of projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and develop an in-house team of designers.
• Lead the delivery and coordination of civil and infrastructure design activities.
• Undertake Principal Designer duties under CDM 2015.
• Manage design solutions through the various stages of project delivery.
• Oversee the preparation and review of drawings, reports, specifications and estimates.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary design inputs and ensure design integrity.
• Check design outputs for accuracy, quality and compliance.
• Manage design workloads, programmes and resources.
• Liaise with Project Managers, clients, framework teams and external design consultants.
• Provide technical guidance to engineers, technicians and apprentices.
• Support the resolution of technical issues across projects.
• Maintain strong client and stakeholder relationships.
• Support commercial management, audits and project reviews.
• Provide regular reporting to senior engineering and framework management.
• Promote innovation, continuous improvement and professional development.

Requirements

The successful Design Manager will ideally have:

• Previous experience as a Design Manager, Senior Design Engineer or similar.
• A background in water, wastewater, utilities, civil engineering or infrastructure.
• Experience managing or leading a design team.
• Strong knowledge of civil/infrastructure design principles and relevant standards.
• Practical understanding of CDM 2015 and Principal Designer responsibilities.
• Excellent technical, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience working collaboratively with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary design teams.

Relevant engineering qualifications and/or professional membership are desirable.
