Job description

Are you an experienced Design Manager looking for your next opportunity within the water and infrastructure sector?

Our client is a well-established and rapidly growing infrastructure business delivering critical projects across the UK. With a strong heritage in civil engineering, utilities and infrastructure, the business works across the water and wastewater sector, delivering safe, high-quality and innovative solutions for major clients.

As Design Manager, you will lead an in-house design team and take responsibility for the successful delivery, coordination and development of design activities across a portfolio of water and infrastructure projects.

The Role

You will provide technical leadership to the design function, ensuring designs are delivered safely, efficiently, commercially and in accordance with client requirements, relevant standards and quality procedures.

A key part of the role will be undertaking Principal Designer duties under CDM 2015, alongside promoting a strong health and safety culture across the design process.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Directly managing, mentoring and developing an in-house team of designers.
• Leading and coordinating civil and infrastructure design activities from concept through to delivery.
• Undertaking Principal Designer duties in accordance with CDM 2015.
• Managing the preparation of design solutions, drawings, reports, specifications and estimates.
• Coordinating inputs from multiple design disciplines and ensuring the overall integrity of designs.
• Reviewing and checking design work to ensure accuracy, compliance and quality.
• Managing design programmes, workloads and resources to meet project and client requirements.
• Working closely with Project Managers, Framework Managers, clients and external design teams.
• Supporting the resolution of technical issues and providing guidance to engineers, technicians and apprentices.
• Maintaining and developing strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
• Supporting commercial management and presenting projects for audit where required.
• Providing regular updates to senior engineering and framework management.
• Promoting innovation, technical development and continuous improvement within the design function.
• Supporting the professional development of team members.
• Maintaining quality and environmental standards in line with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
• Ensuring projects are delivered with consideration for the public, neighbours and surrounding environment.
• Carrying out other duties as reasonably required by the business.

About You

We are looking for an experienced design professional with a strong background in civil engineering and infrastructure, ideally gained within the water or wastewater sector.

You will be comfortable leading a design team, coordinating multiple stakeholders and managing design delivery within a live project environment.

You should have:

• Proven experience in a Design Manager or similar senior design role.
• Experience within water, wastewater, utilities or civil infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of design standards, processes and technical requirements.
• Experience managing and developing design teams.
• Knowledge and practical understanding of CDM 2015 and Principal Designer responsibilities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• The ability to manage competing priorities, programmes and deadlines.
• A strong understanding of health, safety, quality and environmental requirements.
• A collaborative approach with the confidence to provide technical leadership.

Professional qualifications or membership of an appropriate engineering institution would be advantageous.
