Children's Speech and Language Therapist

Wolverhampton Children's SLT Team is a supportive and innovative service.

Are you a newly qualified or experienced Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist and would like to join our team? Our band 5 staff work in mainstream schools, special schools and pre-school areas. We have an excellent NQP programme to support those new to the profession and established management and peer support for those with more experience.

Our SLT Teams are embedded as part of the wider MDTs. The children's service has a wealth of experience and support in areas such as dysfluency, cleft palate, severe speech, HI, ASD and dysphagia. You will have access to proactive SLT team leads, a supportive admin team, embedded supervision, and support structures for both professional development and wellbeing.

We benefit from being part of a large SLT service which includes adult SLT services allowing opportunities for cross-service development projects. The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is a teaching organisation and CPD is both well supported and actively encouraged. There is very strong AHP leadership.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high level of Speech and Language Therapy expertise to children with developmental communication and/or swallowing difficulties.

To manage a defined Speech and Language Therapy caseload independently.

To participate in the development and delivery of training to others.

To supervise Speech and Language Therapy Support Practitioners, volunteers and students.

Job responsibilities

To communicate complex condition related information from assessment to clients, carers, families, multidisciplinary team members and other professionals

To work closely with clients, carers, families and multidisciplinary team members to ensure decision making relevant to client management

To be responsible for assessment, differential diagnosis, formulation of treatment plans, writing assessment reports, providing appropriate intervention and evaluation of treatment outcomes for each individual client in respect of communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties with access to a senior colleague.

To negotiate with carers, clients and others around individual case management

To work with clients with dysphagia commensurate with experience and training.

To access support from senior colleagues in respect of communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties.

To be able to identify areas for own personal/professional development evidenced by personal development plan/professional portfolio developed within the appraisal and KSF framework.

To comply with the professional guidelines of the RCSLT and HCPC.

To be aware of and adhere to the Speech and Language Therapy Service Plan.

To adhere to local clinical guidelines

To contribute to discussions pertaining to proposed service delivery/policy development.

To explain the role of the Speech and Language Therapist

To maintain up to date and accurate case notes in line with professional guidelines and Trust policies.

To work independently with access to supervision as per departmental, Trust and RCSLT guidelines.

To be accountable for own professional actions

To recognise own professional boundaries and to seek advice and support when necessary.

To be aware of and adhere to current legislative and employer procedures relating to the post.

To accept clinical support and advice from designated mentor/senior clinician

To manage a caseload independently.
