Are you passionate about making a real difference in the lives of children and young people? Southampton City Council is seeking committed and compassionate Residential Practitioners to provide outstanding care and support at our new children’s home.

We are looking to build a brand new team to assist in the opening of our new family home in Southampton, caring for young people who have sometimes complex emotional and behavioural difficulties. You would be the person to give encouragement and praise when needed, to be patient and understanding during times of crisis and to inspire them to grow and develop.

The role can be emotionally challenging, and you could be handling difficult situations BUT you could be the person to change a child’s life for the better.

About The Role

As a Residential Practitioner, you’ll play a vital role in creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment where children and young people can thrive. You will work as part of a dedicated team to empower young people to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide high-quality care to children and young people, tailored to their individual needs and circumstances.
  • Foster a safe and inclusive home environment that promotes emotional, social, and educational development.
  • Act as a positive role model, encouraging resilience, confidence, and independence.
  • Support children in day-to-day activities, including education, recreation, and life skills development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and professionals to deliver effective care plans.
  • Handle challenging situations with empathy, professionalism, and patience.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with safeguarding and regulatory standards.
  • Build trusting relationships.
  • Help the children and young people to find pleasure in everyday tasks.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: Previous experience in residential care, childcare, or working with young people is desirable but not essential.
  • Qualifications: NVQ Level 3 in Residential Childcare (or a willingness to work towards this qualification).
  • Skills: Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Attributes: Compassionate, resilient, and committed to the wellbeing of children and young people.
  • Flexibility: Ability to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and sleep-ins.
  • DBS: All staff are required to have an Enhanced DBS. Ideally, being on the DBS update service is desirable.

What We Offer

  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
  • A strong Leadership and Management team. This will consist of a Manager, Deputy and Senior Practitioners.
  • Comprehensive training and professional development opportunities.
  • Supportive team environment with a focus on wellbeing.
  • The chance to contribute to the positive development of children and young people in Southampton.
  • Pay enhancement will be applicable.

Southampton City Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All successful candidates will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check and provide satisfactory references.

Join us and help shape brighter futures for children and young people in Southampton!

The home will aim to provide innovative care and education services to children and young people who have emotional and behavioural difficulties. We will do our best to make every day extraordinary for the children we care for and support, because we believe in every single one of them.
