Job summary

Wellcome Sanger Institute is seeking a Head of Enterprise IT Architecture to lead architecture strategy, governance and standards across the Informatics and Digital Solutions (IDS) function. The role demands robust, scalable, secure and interoperable designs that support the Institute's scientific missions and operational needs across research, infrastructure and applications.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience leading IT solution architecture in a complex tech environment.
• Proven ability to chair design governance bodies (e.g., Technical Design Authority).
• Expertise aligning IT architecture with institutional objectives and strategy.
• Strong communication with senior scientific, operational and technology stakeholders.
• Deep knowledge of cloud, data, integration and application architectures.
• Ability to translate strategy into actionable architecture roadmaps and investments.
• Experience reducing technical debt in large IT estates.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture strategy, governance and standards across IDS.
• Chair the Design Authority and coordinate enterprise, domain and solution architecture.
• Develop architecture principles, roadmaps and mapping of IDS systems and applications.
• Review and approve key designs, ensuring security, scalability and interoperability.
• Manage IT risk, technical debt, obsolescence and promote sustainable innovation.
• Represent the Institute in external architecture forums and partnerships.
• Collaborate with senior leaders to balance standardisation with scientific flexibility.
