Job summary

North Star is seeking a Chief Engineer for our SOV fleet. Start date 14 October 2026. This is a permanent position with a 4 week on / 4 weeks off rotation.

Suitable candidates will have previously served as Chief Engineer and should hold a UK CoC / UK FSE; we may consider non‑UK candidates willing to apply for the UK equivalent certificate of competency.

Qualifications

• Experience as Chief Engineer on a ship.
• Hold UK CoC or UK FSE or be willing to apply for the UK equivalent certificate of competency.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the technical status of the ship, machinery and propulsion systems and ensure equipment is operational.
• Ensure compliance with flag state rules, Classification Society, IMO, Port Authorities and owners' management.
• Manage safe, efficient and economic operation and maintenance of all onboard machinery and systems.
• Maintain an effective engine room watch at all times.
• Report defects via the planned maintenance system and keep status up to date.
• Requisition stores, spares and equipment for the Engine Department.
• Delegate tasks to Engine Room staff.
• Promote the company's Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Policy and inter-departmental communications.

Suitable candidates require to have worked in a Chief Engineer capacity previously and should hold a UK CoC / UK FSE although we would consider non UK candidates who are willing to apply for the UK equivalent certificate of competency (UK FSE).

Chief Engineer Is Responsible For

• The technical status of the ship, its machinery and propulsion systems, and for ensuring that all equipment installed onboard is in an operational condition.
• Ensuring the vessel complies with relevant rules and regulations as issued by the authorities of the flag of the vessel, by Classification Society, by I.M.O. Port Authorities and by the vessels owners' management.
• Carrying out the safe, efficient and economic operation and maintenance of all machinery, systems and specialist equipment permanently installed on board, as well as the maintenance of the fabric of the vessel.
• Ensuring that, in all circumstances and at all times, an effective and efficient watch is maintained in the engine room
• Reporting defects via company approved planned maintenance system.
• Promptly updating status and content of defects within company approved planned maintenance system to ensure they are kept up to date and current.
• Requisitioning stores, spares and equipment for the Engine Department
• Delegating tasks to Engine Room staff.
• Actively promoting and progressing the company Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Policy.
• Actively promoting inter-departmental communications.
