Job summary

Greenpeace International is recruiting a Chief Engineer (STCW A-III/2, unlimited) for our new 75m sailing vessel project. The role begins in the Vigo shipyard, with delivery planned for October 2027.

The candidate will oversee engine plant operation during sea service and participate in the shipyard build, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards. Experience in methanol/LFL fuel and IGF Code is preferred.

Qualifications

• Valid STCW Chief Engineer A-III/2 unlimited certificates.
• Desirable: methanol / LFL fuel experience and IGF Code certification.
• Desirable: shipyard/vessel handover experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee safe operation and maintenance of engine plant and equipment onboard vessels.
• Attend shipyard meetings with shipyard teams, site and remote teams on new build progress.
• Familiarise with new ship systems and assist in planned maintenance for the new build.
• Monitor engine room watch setup and ensure proper procedures are followed.
• Prepare monthly engine room reports and coordinate with the Technical Manager.

Job description

We are looking for a Chief Engineer (STCW A-III/2, unlimited) to join our team, starting in the shipyard where our new vessel is being built.

• The required starting date would be October 2026 in the shipyard in Vigo, Spain.
• Our new vessel will be a 75m Sailing (DynaRig system) special-purpose, Ice class PC7 vessel, propulsion: two E-Motors, dual-prop (CPP) driven, powered by 4 pcs dual-fuel (MeOH and MGO) engines, 4 pcs FC (fuel cells) run on compressed H2, Battery pack with the ability to recharge from props (regeneration), solar panels, all connected on DC bus and water cooled. The vessel is Dutch flagged and is maintained in DNV class, subject to regular surveys and inspections.
• The vessel delivery is planned for October 2027

In this role you will, amongst other things

During your time in the shipyard:

• Monitor the building of the new vessel in collaboration with the GP hired supervision team of OSM Thome.
• Attend meetings with shipyard, site and remote teams on the new build progress.
• Familiarise yourself with the new ship systems and assist in the planned maintenance system for the new build.

Onboard our vessels:

Responsible to the Master for:

• Safe operation and maintenance of engine plant and equipment.
• Follow the Safety Management System of Greenpeace.
• Safe watch keeping of engine plant and equipment at sea and in port in accordance with STCW Ch VIII.
• Safe operation and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical equipment outside the engine room.
• Supervising the maintenance of rigid hull inflatable boats (rhibs) and outboard engines and ensuring technical readiness of rhibs for Campaigns.
• Supervising the work of all engine staff including out board mechanics and fitter / welder.
• Set-up of engine room watches at sea and in port.
• Issue clear Standing Instructions to engine staff for watch keeping, bunkering, and emergency engine procedures.
• Implement Master’s instructions on safe working practice and shipboard environmental policy in the engine room.
• Ensuring that there are no illegal discharges of oil, garbage, sewage from the engine room in contravention of the MARPOL Convention as amended.
• Ensuring that the Oil record Book is properly maintained as per the instructions contained therein.
• Ensuring that the Oily Water Separator (OWS) and Oil Detection Monitor (ODM) where fitted are regularly tested and any illegal connections immediately removed and reported to the Master and Technical Manager.
• Ensures that the fleet management software where provided is regularly updated for planned maintenance, inventory control, spare and consumable requisitions.
• Ensure that required spares are requisitioned in time and followed up with the Technical Manager.
• Maintain engine logbooks and produce monthly reports to the Technical Manager.
• Assign work and responsibilities to the engine room staff.
• Ensuring that machinery which is not in regular use are periodically tested and maintained.
• Confer with the Technical Manager regarding procedures and policies for the engine room and all other equipment.
• Advise the Master on arrival of the condition of all equipment and to confer with the Technical Manager on priorities of work in port.
• Confer with the Master daily when at sea and report any deficiencies immediately.
• Maintain accountability and logbooks of all mechanical and electrical spares, fuel/water levels and spares used.
• Provide a written report each month or at the end of the voyage, whichever precedes, and cover general performance of the engine room and equipment; any problem areas and any recommendation for replacement / maintenance / additional equipment.
• Adhere strictly to bunker procedures, which should be prominently displayed and record pre bunker meetings in the Engine log book.
• Request Master to post deck personnel temporarily to the engine room when required.
• Before entry and departure port all engine controls are tested and records of tests entered in the engine log book
• Participate in Campaigns and training.

• Valid STCW certificates for a Chief Engineer (STCW A-III/2, unlimited)
• Desirable to have experience with methanol / LFL fuel, IGF Code certified.
• Desirable to have previous experience in a shipyard for vessel take over.
• A long term team player with good interpersonal skills that can work with a set of diverse crew.
