Job summary

Expleo Group is seeking a Build Superintendent for on-site oversight of vessel conversion activities in the North-West UK. You will monitor construction progress, ensure compliance with engineering documentation, and coordinate with shipyards, design teams and regulators.

The role requires full-time on-site work, naval/shipyard expertise, and security clearance considerations. You will support commissioning, testing and handover with a focus on safety, quality and timely delivery.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering or equivalent.
  • Professional membership (RINA/IMarEST/IMeche) and IEng/CEng status or progressing toward registration.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specs and technical docs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site construction oversight across work packages.
  • Verify activities comply with specifications and QA plans.
  • Attend meetings for planning, production and coordination.
  • Review technical queries and support issue resolution.
  • Ensure alignment with technical baseline and change control.
  • Witness inspections and oversee commissioning readiness.
  • Liaise with Classification Society and regulators; monitor compliance.
  • Report progress, risks and safety performance to stakeholders.
  • Support safe execution of construction, commissioning and testing.

Job description

We have several exciting on-going projects with clients across both commercial & naval marine domains and are seeking to expand our existing engineering team.

The role of the Build Superintendent shall be to provide on-site technical oversight of vessel conversion activities, acting as the primary engineering representative responsible for monitoring construction progress, workmanship, quality and compliance throughout the build programme.

Working closely with the shipyard, project team, design organisations, equipment suppliers and regulatory bodies, the Build Superintendent shall ensure that all work is undertaken safely, in accordance with approved engineering documentation, contractual requirements, classification society rules and statutory regulations.

This is an opportunity to be deployed with one of our existing clients on a full-time basis for 18+ months. As this role is a construction oversight role, there is a requirement to be on-site full time and shall therefore require the successful candidate to be located, willing to re-locate or willing to travel to the North-West region of the UK.

Responsibilities
  • Construction Oversight
  • Monitor conversion activities across all allocated work packages.
  • Verify activities are undertaken in accordance with engineering specification.
  • Oversee workmanship and identify corrective actions.
  • Attend production, planning and coordination meetings.
Engineering Support
  • Review technical queries.
  • Support resolution of engineering issues.
  • Review engineering change and verify implementation.
  • Ensure alignment with the technical baseline.
  • Provide engineering advice to support decision-making.
Quality Assurance
  • Witness inspection and acceptance activities.
  • Monitor compliance with Inspection & Test Plans.
  • Verify completion of quality records.
  • Participate in completion, commissioning and handover activities.
Classification & Regulatory Compliance
  • Liaise with Classification Society and regulatory authorities.
  • Monitor compliance with Rules, Standards and Statutory requirements.
  • Support vessel certification activities.
  • Verify the completion of survey actions and documentation.
Commissioning & Trials
  • Witness function testing and system demonstrations.
  • Participate in Harbour & Sea Acceptance Trials.
  • Record technical observations and monitor defect resolution.
Health, Safety & Environmental Oversight
  • Promote a safety culture.
  • Monitor compliance with safety procedures and Permit to Work systems.
  • Report unsafe conditions and/or practices.
  • Support safe execution of construction, commissioning and testing activities.
Progress & Risk Reporting
  • Produce regular reports covering construction progress, quality, technical issues and programme risks.
  • Escalate significant concerns that may affect safety, quality, schedule or cost.
  • Support project review, providing objective evidence of progress and readiness.
Stakeholder Management
  • Develop effective working relationships with shipyard management & production, client representatives, Design Authority, equipment suppliers, commissioning teams, Classification Society surveyors and Project Management Office.
  • Maintain professional, collaborative relationships while providing constructive technical challenge where required.
Qualifications
  • Degree or HNC/HND Qualification(s) in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering or related disciplines.
  • Professional member of a relevant engineering institution (e.g., RINA, IMarEST, IMechE).
  • Recognised as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) by the UK Engineering Council or working towards professional registration.
Essential Skills
  • Interpretation of engineering drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of Classification Society requirements.
  • Planning, execution and oversight of ship commissioning and acceptance activities.
  • Proven ability to manage technical issues within complex engineering programmes.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to operate independently within a client environment.
  • Security Clearance (SC) or eligibility to obtain clearance.

Experience
  • Significant experience in commercial or naval shipyards, supporting ship construction, conversion or major refit programmes.
  • Royal Navy or Royal Fleet Auxiliary platform experience.
  • Experience of auxiliary vessels, tankers or large commercial vessel conversions.
What Do I Need Before I Apply
  • The post will be based in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services.
