Job summary

West Sussex County Council is seeking Casual Library Assistants for Crawley Library. You will provide friendly customer support, help visitors access resources, and assist with day-to-day library operations. Flexible casual hours up to 37 per week, based in Crawley.

Salary ranges from £14.88 to £15.11 per hour, including annual leave entitlement, with eligibility for Crawley Weighting Allowance. Interview date is to be confirmed.

Qualifications

• GCSEs with 9–4 / A–C passes including Maths and English.
• Experience working collaboratively within a team.
• Digital skills to assist customers, including navigating emails and the library website/app/eLibrary.
• Strong communication and customer service skills to engage effectively with the public.
• Good interpersonal skills with children, families and customers of all ages.
• Capable of meeting deadlines and adapting to varied demands of each day, ensuring smooth service.
• Skilled in taking initiative and applying sound judgment while adhering to library practices.

Responsibilities

• Being the dedicated go-to person for customers at the library, passionately helping them with their questions and guiding them to other services.
• Supporting the delivery of a wide range of reading events, including Rhyme Times and author talks.
• Using a variety of IT systems and services confidently, including registering new members.
• Responding to enquiries from customers and colleagues, both in person and over the phone.
• Helping with reading recommendations.
• Maintaining, presenting, and processing book stock.
