Job summary

Nelson and Colne College is hiring Casual Learning Support Assistants to join the Additional Learning Support Team. You will support learners with diverse needs, helping them access learning and build confidence in a variety of settings across college sites.

Full training and ongoing professional development will be provided. You will work with teaching staff to promote inclusion, independence and successful participation in college life.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English Grade 4/C or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate empathy, patience and help young people succeed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-class support to learners with additional needs and disabilities.
  • Help learners overcome barriers to learning and participate fully.
  • Implement agreed support strategies and reasonable adjustments.
  • Promote learner confidence, independence, resilience and self-advocacy.
  • Support learners in classrooms, workshops, and activities.
  • Encourage active participation and engagement.
  • Provide personal care and maintain dignity and independence when needed.
  • Contribute to ADPR processes and EHCP reviews with progress notes.
  • Act as examination invigilator after appropriate training.
  • Collaborate with curriculum and Inclusion teams to create inclusive environments.
  • Safeguard and promote welfare of children and vulnerable adults.

Salary: £13.35 per hour
Hours: Casual, variable hours as required

Site: Accrington & Rossendale College; Nelson and Colne College; Lancashire Adult Learning (various community venues throughout the county)

The Exciting Role

A rewarding opportunity has become available for Casual Learning Support Assistants to join our Additional Learning Support Team. This is a varied and fulfilling role supporting learners with a wide range of additional needs, disabilities and barriers to learning. You will work alongside teaching staff to help learners participate fully in college life, access their learning and develop the confidence and independence needed to achieve their goals. Support may take place in a variety of settings including classrooms, workshops, practical learning environments, outdoor activities, community-based learning, work placements, volunteering opportunities and dedicated Additional Learning Support spaces during lunch periods. We are looking for caring, empathetic and positive individuals who are passionate about supporting young people to succeed. Previous SEND experience is welcome but not essential. We are equally interested in applicants with strong communication skills, a willingness to learn and a genuine commitment to inclusion.

What you will be doing
  • Providing in-class support to learners with a range of additional needs and disabilities.
  • Supporting learners to overcome barriers to learning, participation and achievement.
  • Implementing agreed support strategies and reasonable adjustments.
  • Promoting learner confidence, independence, resilience and self-advocacy.
  • Supporting learners in classrooms, workshops, practical activities, work placements and community-based learning.
  • Encouraging active participation, attendance and engagement.
  • Providing personal care and physical support where required, maintaining dignity, privacy and independence at all times.
  • Contributing to Assess, Do, Plan, Review (ADPR) processes and EHCP annual reviews by providing observations and progress information.
  • Acting as an invigilator for examinations and assessments following appropriate training.
  • Working collaboratively with curriculum and Inclusion teams to create inclusive learning environments.
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Previous experience working with young people, learners with SEND, care settings, youth work, support services or community organisations would be advantageous but is not essential.

Full training and ongoing professional development will be provided.
