Central Recruitment is currently recruiting for a part‑time Caseworker, to work in the Walthamstow area. The service is a drop‑in centre and night shelter with up to 15 beds in the winter months. The service provides support to those who are homeless to help them move towards independence.
The successful candidate will be required to work 19 hours per week (2.5 – 3 days), working across Monday – Thursday, 9 AM – 5 PM. Temporary cover is required for approximately 2 – 3 months, with the possibility of extension. The pay rate for this role is £16.00 per hour, with £1.93 holiday pay, totalling £17.93 per hour.
Responsibilities
- Hold a caseload of clients and help them find accommodation and/or refer them to local services including rehabilitation agencies that can help them turn their lives around.
- Provide one‑to‑one guidance and support to homeless clients using the night shelter provision and drop‑in day centre, and connect them with services appropriate to their needs.
- Report to the Charity Director and work in close partnership with the casework and administration team to ensure the smooth operation of all charitable activities of the organisation.
- Work collaboratively to ensure that all staff/volunteers are appropriately briefed and ready to receive guests according to the referral process.
- Be responsible for the general wellbeing of service users.
- Liaise with external agencies (Drug & Alcohol, Housing and others) on clients' behalf.
- Provide guidance for clients with regards to welfare, benefits and accommodation.
- Support clients to move‑on and sustain their tenancy.
- Keep accurate and up to date electronic and written records of interactions with clients and casework.
- Maintain good, positive relationships with shelter guests and volunteers.
Qualifications
- Experience working with homelessness and complex needs ideally in a winter night shelter.
- Experience of support casework, carrying out key working sessions and completing Support Plans.
- Working knowledge of the benefits system, social housing and housing law.
- Understanding of trauma informed care.
- An empathetic approach to people in difficult circumstances.
- Experience of dealing with challenging behaviour.
- Good administrative and organisational skills and competent in the use of IT particularly Email, MS Word and MS Excel.
- Desirable; NVQ L3 Social Care.

Further Requirements
- Current valid right to work in the UK.
- Minimum 12 months' of paid experience in a front‑line social care role within the last 3 years* (unless recruitment criteria states otherwise).
- A fully enhanced DBS either registered on the DBS update service or issued within the last 12 months, or willingness to apply for one through Central (at a cost of £60).
- Employment or education history to cover the last 5 years which can be verified through the referencing process.
