Job summary

Birmingham City Council’s Virtual School is seeking a Post 18 Advisor to support care-experienced young people as they plan for higher education, employment and training. You will work with Personal Advisors, HE providers and other professionals to create personalised transition plans and ensure high-quality advocacy and guidance.

The role involves coordinating information sharing, representing care leavers at panels, and maintaining accurate case records.

Qualifications

• Experience of working with vulnerable post-18 students, including SEND or care-leaving contexts.
• Experience with higher education settings, SEND services or care-leaving services.
• Experience of preparing care leavers for adulthood.
• Experience advising post-18 students on career pathways, HE, employment and training.
• Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to interpret complex reports and data.
• Ability to lead and motivate teams to meet deadlines.
• Ability to engage with young people and build relationships.
• Knowledge of attachment difficulties and trauma-informed practice.
• Understanding of care leavers legislation and policy updates.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality educational advocacy, advice and support for care leavers post-18.
• Help develop coordinated transition plans and pathways into higher education, employment and training.
• Represent care leavers at panels, forums and multi-agency meetings.
• Coordinate the Virtual School’s central support for care leavers.
• Facilitate information sharing between agencies and professionals.
• Oversee the quality and accuracy of case records and reports.
