Job summary

MHA is seeking a Maintenance Worker / Gardener for Hampton Lodge in Southampton. The role covers upkeep of buildings, equipment, grounds and gardens, with collaboration from management and external contractors to meet safety and environmental standards.

The ideal candidate will have practical maintenance/gardening skills, a possible trade qualification, good communication, team work, and flexibility for occasional travel or out-of-hours work. DBS checks may be required.

Qualifications

• Practical skills in general maintenance and/or gardening.
• Desirable trade qualification (e.g. City & Guilds in plumbing, joinery, electrical or decorating).
• Good communication and listening skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Flexible approach including occasional travel or out-of-hours attendance.
• Sensitivity to the needs of older people and commitment to quality service.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across the home, including minor repairs, decorating and general upkeep.
• Help develop and follow a planned preventative maintenance schedule.
• Maintain gardens, lawns, paths and outdoor areas, ensuring safety and presentation.
• Monitor heating, water systems, lighting and other equipment, keeping records.
• Test fire alarms and support health & safety compliance.
• Liaise with Home Manager and contractors for servicing and inspections.
• Assist with risk assessments and address hazards promptly.
• Support safe movement of furniture and equipment following manual handling guidance.
• Respect residents’ privacy, dignity and choice.
• Attend training, supervision, appraisals and staff meetings.
