An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5/6 Cardiac Physiologist/Healthcare Science Practitioner within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our busy and friendly team. The department provides a wide range of investigations including Electrocardiograms, Holter ECG monitoring, Pacemaker/ICD implant and follow-up, Angiography, Electrophysiology studies, and Echocardiography.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have opportunities for development in both invasive and non-invasive cardiology. Continued professional and personal development is encouraged, with support to develop postgraduate skills. Entry at Band 5 allows progression to Band 6 after achieving competencies, typically within 18 months.

Successful applicants should have a BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or Healthcare Science (Cardiac Science), or equivalent. Final year students will be considered. RCCP / AHCS registration is desirable.

Job responsibilities

Band 5

• Participate in delivering a specialist clinical service and high-quality patient care.
• Rotate through all sections of the Cardiac Services department to build specialist knowledge.
• Engage in experiential learning for ongoing training.
• Contribute to departmental training initiatives.

Band 6

• All responsibilities of Band 5, plus:
• Participate in the on-call rota, providing 24-hour emergency support for cardiac catheterisation labs.
• Rotate through sections of the department to deepen expertise.
• Attend advanced courses to develop specialist knowledge.
• Support training and mentoring within the department.

Note: Successful candidates requiring a DBS will have the cost deducted from their first salary payment.

Person Specification

Band 6

• BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or Healthcare Sciences (Cardiac Science) or equivalent.
• RCCP or HCPC/AHCS registration.
• Immediate Life Support certification.
• Post-qualification experience in cardiology, with evidence of CPD and competency in ECG interpretation, haemodynamic monitoring, support for training, and participation in practice development.
• Availability for on-call work.
• Postgraduate mentorship qualification preferred.

Band 5

• BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or Healthcare Science.
• Knowledge of adult ECG interpretation and ambulatory monitoring.
• Skills in exercise testing and haemodynamic equipment setup.
• Resuscitation skills and registration with AHCS or RCCP.
