Job summary

Thames Water is seeking an Asset Planner to own and develop integrated site plans across Thames Valley, with hybrid working and a Reading office presence every Tuesday. You will coordinate across engineering, asset strategy, and operations to optimise capital maintenance, balance risk, and deliver five-year AMP priorities within regulatory frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Own the plan for sites and systems and maintain plans through the sponsorship model.
  • Lead development of integrated site plans via cross-functional collaboration and sequencing.
  • Keep site and system plans up to date in response to project changes.
  • Incorporate input from Asset Strategy for AMP planning and Price Review 29.
  • Develop and prioritise projects for 5-year AMPs with defined technical scope.
  • Create and manage system-wide plans across abstraction, treatment, storage, pumping and sludge.
  • Deliver capital maintenance plans and monitor asset health against incentives.
  • Monitor asset condition and maintenance standards and failure rates.
  • Support external engagement to explain and align with strategic plans.

What you’ll be doing as an Asset Planner
  • You will own the plan for your sites and systems and stay involved in the plans as they are delivered through the sponsorship model.
  • Lead the development of integrated site plans by facilitating cross-functional collaboration, identifying interdependencies and determining the optimal sequencing of interventions.
  • Continuously update and maintain comprehensive site and system-level plans, adapting to project changes and reflecting evolving priorities across the asset lifecycle.
  • Gather long-term strategic input from Asset Strategy to inform Price Review 29 planning and ensure alignment with future needs.
  • Develop and prioritise projects for current and future 5-yearly Asset Management Periods (AMPs), incorporating engineering insights and defining technical scope for robust submissions to decision gates.
  • Create and manage system-wide plans across abstraction, treatment, storage, pumping, and sludge assets—addressing capital maintenance, growth, enhancement, and quality goals.
  • Deliver on Capital maintenance plans and the efficient spend in relation to asset health and supporting our Outcome Delivery Incentives.
  • Monitor and evaluate asset condition, maintenance standards and anticipated failure rates.
  • Support external engagement activities, helping stakeholders understand and align with our strategic plans.

Base Location: Hybrid - Base location is flexible across the Thames Valley and Home Counties region but must be able to attend our Reading office every Tuesday.

Working Pattern: Full-time, Monday–Friday. (36 hours per week)

What you should bring to the role

The essential criteria to help you succeed in this role are:

  • Knowledge of asset management, engineering best practices and planning/forecasting.
  • Confident communicator who builds strong relationships across teams and external stakeholders.
  • Analytical and confident with numbers, able to communicate complex ideas clearly and simply.
  • Proactive, can influence across all levels and consider different views.
  • Able to work flexibly across multiple workstreams, responding to changes in focus.
  • Has a good understanding of risk management.
Additional skills and experiences would be great to have/bring
  • Knowledgeable about water and wastewater systems and external impacts.
  • Professional membership of an engineering, environmental or asset management organisation is an advantage.
  • Ideally, understand regulatory processes, such as price reviews or annual returns.
